Geometry and Fractions can be so much fun to practice in 2nd Grade. While these concepts have been introduced in Kindergarten and 1st Grade, this 2nd Grade Unit 5 includes more challenging activities to help students gain a deeper understanding of them. It is truly a rewarding experience to see students’ knowledge grow as they build on previously taught lessons.
In this math unit on Geometry and Fractions, students will learn to:
*Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces.
*Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.
*Partition a rectangle into rows and columns of same-size squares and count to find the total number of them.
*Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc., and describe the whole as two halves, three thirds, four fourths.
*Recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape.

HOW DO I ORGANIZE THE UNITS?
I chose to store the math centers in Sterilite bins, because they don’t take up too much space. It is a tight fit, but I find that they work nicely for me. However, if you choose, you could store the centers in a larger container as well. Within the bin, each math center is stored in a gallon sized ziplock baggie.
