Try the JavaScript of things with the Espruino - the world's first open-source JavaScript microcontroller! This little board has an STM32 microcontroller pre-programmed with Espruino all ready to go so you can start playing with Javascript-microcontrollers. Warning: if you only use Assembly and think that even embedded C/C++ is for wimps, this device might explody your head.
The Espruino is a tiny computer with a JavaScript interpreter, allowing for instant feedback from whatever device you're working with. Simply set up your code with the Espruino and send it to the device without having to wait for the board to 'flash.'
The Espruino's fast response time has a lot of advantages. It allows for quick and easy debugging and is a great way to test your project before your big reveal. In addition, you can control the Espruino from almost anything - Windows, Mac OS, Linux, RasPi, Android, anything that can talk to a USB Serial port.
The Espruino also interacts well with our NeoPixels. For more info, check out Espruino's page on the WS2811 and WS2812.
While the main advantage of the Espruino is its instant execution, it can also be used as a traditional board through a Web-based IDE hosted on your computer. The microcontroller also uses less power than Linux Boards (although its of course a lot less powerful as well) so will run longer on battery power, it has loads of IO pins, and it can be used as an IO board for PCs, Macs, or Rasp Pis without having to program it first. Simply take the Espruino out of its packaging and get started!

Revision History:
As of 12/18/2014 the Espruino board is now shipping with the following improvements:
CE Approval
32kHz crystal on board (it's much better at keeping time accurately now)
Pads for a Lithium Ion charger IC (if you want to fit one)
Slightly moved, but much stronger Micro USB connector
Much lower power voltage regulator - the old board drew 0.1mA in sleep, this one draws 0.03mA!
Solder jumped so you can turn the reset button into a second general purpose button

Espruino 1.4 - Open Source Javascript Microcontroller
Perhaps a bit long in the tooth now (as microcontrollers go) the Espruino 1.4 is still a very useful piece of kit, and certainly a wonderful and inexpensive toy.
My day job involves writing Javascript, and I could hardly believe it when I found a microcontroller that can be programmed in nothing more than good old Javascript.
Not only that, but the Espruino is bristling with pins (or rather it is once you've soldered them on). Although I don't think the Espruino was ever as big as Arduino or Pico, it is nonetheless still well-supported (thanks to Gordon W), and it's a very capable device. If you have ever played with an Arduino or a Raspberry Pi Pico, do yourself a favour, and try an Espruino.
