January 30, (THEWILL) – The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has officially flagged off the construction of five mini-liquefied natural gas plants in Ajaokuta, Kogi State, as part of efforts to boost Nigeria’s gas sector and drive industrialization.

The five small-scale gas plants—Prime LNG, NGML/Gasnexus LNG, BUA LNG, Highland LNG, and LNG Arete—are set to serve as critical downstream infrastructure for the ongoing Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano gas pipeline project.

The plants will process, store, and distribute liquefied natural gas via trucks to industrial end users across the country.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony on Thursday, NNPC Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, disclosed that equipment for the plants had arrived in the country and were undergoing clearance at the ports.

“This is not just a groundbreaking event. The equipment for these projects are already at the ports, and we have a clear timeline for their delivery. They will be completed on schedule,” Kyari assured.

He emphasised President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to gas development as a tool for economic transformation.

“The President has been very clear—this is the time for a gas revolution. Nigeria has enormous gas reserves, and he believes gas is the vehicle to industrialize our country. We will not allow unnecessary delays,” he said.

Governor of Kogi State, Usman Ododo, hailed the project as a bold step towards economic growth, job creation, and environmental sustainability.

“These projects will unlock $500 million in investments, create jobs, and help reduce carbon emissions while promoting energy independence. The establishment of these energy plants will have a direct economic and social impact, leading to improved critical infrastructure in our communities,” Ododo noted.

Minister of Steel Development, Shuaibu Audu, added that the gas plants align with the government’s ambition to revive Nigeria’s steel industry, particularly the Ajaokuta Steel Complex.

“The benefits of such projects are immense. They will generate millions of jobs and contribute significantly to Nigeria’s GDP.

“The government remains focused on reviving the Ajaokuta Steel Plant, which is why we have signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding with a Russian TPP consortium for the rehabilitation and operation of the steel plant,” Audu said.
