CHANDIGARH: AAP MP from Anandpur Sahib, Malvinder Singh Kang, on Friday raised the issue of protesting farmers and alleged discrimination against Punjab by the Centre in the Lok Sabha. He also alleged that the BJP failed to pay tributes to BR Ambedkar and Bhagat Singh.
Kang said, “While the debts of Rs 13 lakh crore corporate houses are being waived off, farmers are forced to protest on the streets for the past year and their issues are not being heard. They are being branded anti-national for their peaceful protests. It is against the spirit of the Constitution.”
"The Centre is weakening the principle of secularism of the Constitution and is continuously reducing the powers of the states. All the states should get rights as per the Constitution. Today we need to stand guard to protect our Constitution,” he said.
“Aam Aadmi Party is the first party that started using pictures of BR Ambedkar, father of the Indian Constitution, and freedom fighter Bhagat Singh in every govt office in Delhi and Punjab. It is ironic that the Union Defence Minister’s speech did not make any mention of Ambedkar, Bhagat Singh, or Kartar Singh Sarabha. On the contrary, it is sad that he praised those who tendered apologies to the British,” said Kang.
He alleged that the autonomy of India’s democratic institutions is under threat as investigative agencies are being misused. “The independence of institutions must be safeguarded. Whether it is the Election Commission or the judiciary, every institution is under scrutiny. The independence of our democratic institutions must be protected at all costs,” he said, adding, "Despite Delhi’s overwhelming mandate for
Arvind Kejriwal, the central govt introduced undemocratic amendments to reduce the powers of the Delhi govt."
“The Constitution establishes India as a secular state, but today, riots are being orchestrated on the basis of caste and religion. People are being discriminated against based on their food, attire, and beliefs,” Kang claimed. Citing an example, he noted that the Centre rejected the recommendation of two senior lawyers for judgeship in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, allegedly due to their religious identity.
Kang, who started by paying tributes to BR Ambedkar, said the Centre should introspect on why Punjab is being discriminated against. “Punjab suffered the most during the freedom struggle, but it is still deprived of its capital,” he said.
