GUWAHATI: The capital city of Assam has worn a new look on the Independence Day eve as streets, flyovers, office buildings, business establishments and residential apartments have been illuminated with tricolour lights apart from the national flag fluterring everywhere.
National flags made of khadi cloth as well as polyester have been put up on the railings of flyovers by the government as well as the ruling BJP.
The Gandhi Mandap, a memorial for
Mahatma Gandhi atop the Sarania Hill in the heart of the city, has been readied to celebrate the 75th year of independence on Monday. It is the place where the state government in 2018 had installed the 9,600 sqft flag on a 319.5ft flag pole. The Mandap has been lit up with the tricolour hues. Considering only the height of the flagpole, the national flag at Gandhi Mandap is the third highest in the country after Punjab's Attari border (360 ft) and Pimpri Chinchwad Bhakti Shakti Chowk, Pune (351 ft).
Apart from the Gandhi Mandap, the Janata Bhawan, office of the director general of police, Guwahati railway station, Kamakhya railway station, Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Kamakhya temple, Guwahati refinery and office of the Assam Power Distribution Company are some of the prominent places that have been decorated for the I-Day.
Assam Police in Guwahati on Sunday took out a bike rally to mark the "Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav" from Khanapara to police reserve at Paltanbazar in the city.
