You don't find personal opinions private claims or special pleading in ads for Philip Morris cigarettes.
Johnny Roventini (1910-1998), the famous Philip Morris spokesperson, talks to a couple about the trustworthiness of Philip Morris advertisements: “Our ads neither coax nor hoax,” the headline reads. The copy text provides “findings of a group of distinguished doctors” which claim that nose and throat irritation “cleared completely or definitely improved” in smokers who switched to Philip Morris. For Philip Morris to insist that this is a “proved difference” rather than a “claim or plea” is ludicrous. There is no such thing as a safe cigarette, yet the text says you can have “smoking pleasure without penalties!” The ad is masquerading as honest, while it is actually manipulative, capitalizing on the public’s worries over smoking-related health conditions.
