There’s no doubt that New Zealand has a lot to offer. Those views, the wildlife, endless beaches and well, the country’s mighty meat pie is unrivalled.
But perhaps unknown to those visiting NZ is that the country in spotted with picture-perfect cabins which are open to the public. And these isolated gems, used by local walkers, offer some of the best views the country has to offer.
Best of all, the Government-run huts offer the ultimate kiwi experience for just $25 a person. So, here’s our top six to visit.

Found on the Kepler Track in the South Island’s Fiordland, the Luxmore Hut boasts to having 54 bunks and some of the best views NZ has to offer.
And it’s perhaps a pretty strong selling point, because outside of the views, the hut offers basic amenities. There are no showers, only running cold water and no gas is supplied, with campers having to bring their own instead.
But just look at that view.
It’s highly unlikely that there’s a dorm room with a prettier view than Konini Lodge and its surrounding snow-capped mountains.
Found in Dawson Falls, near New Plymouth in the North Island, there’s 38 bunks, lounge area and a full kitchen.
Best bit? You can drive right up to the door, and use it as a base, rather than hiking up with a rammed rucksack.
It would be a disservice to NZ to not list the incredible scarlet alpine lodge, the Meuller Hut. Found in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, this 28-bunk hut is at the end of a four-hour hike, which isn’t for the weak of mind or leg.
For $36 a night, you’ll get a bed and shared use of facilities, including fully-working kitchen with oven and a shower.
Situated at the top of the Coromandel, Fletcher Bay Campsite is a four-bedroom lodge, with two bunk bed in each, costing $25.50 a night.
A favourite with backpackers, it boasts to having a fully-equipped kitchen with stove, microwave and fridge. And there’s a shared bathroom.
And from the cutesy lodge, guests can access the Coromandel Walkway and mountain bike track.
Close to Auckland harbour is Rangitoto Island, a volcanic isle that’s just 5.5km in width. It’s been a favourite weekend getaway with Aucklanders for years, especially for those wanting to take advantage of the many walking routes.
Bach 78, a four-bedroom hut found on the waterfront, is just $30 per night, per person, and is quaintly sticking to the time it was built in the 1920s. Perfect for a weekend away with the girls.
