Benji Gregory, the actor best known for playing ALF‘s Brian Tanner, died on June 13 at the age of 46. Now, an Arizona medical examiner has released his cause of death.
Gregory, who was found dead in his parked car at a Chase Bank in Peoria, Ariz., reportedly died from “heat exposure in the setting of hepatic cirrhosis,” TMZ reports. Essentially this means it was a combination of prolonged exposure to the Arizona sun as well as extensive scarring of the liver.
It’s believed that Gregory visited the bank on June 12 and fell asleep. The actor’s service dog Hans, who was with him, also died. Gregory’s sister told TMZ that he dealt with depression, bipolar disorder and a sleep disorder that kept him awake for days.
The actor rose to fame as Brian on ALF, which aired for four seasons (from 1986-1990) on NBC and produced four hour-long specials: “Try to Remember,” “ALF’s Special Christmas,” “Someone to Watch Over Me” and “Tonight, Tonight.”
He also made appearances on Fantastic Max, Pound Puppies, Murphy Brown, Fantasy Island, The A-Team, T.J. Hooker, Amazing Stories, The Twilight Zone and Mr. Boogedy. Additionally, he recurred on the sitcom Punky Brewster as an orphan named Dash.
On the film side, Gregory was featured in 1986’s Jumpin’ Jack Flash (starring Whoopi Goldberg) and voiced Edgar the Mole in the animated feature Once Upon a Forest.
This is sad to hear. He was a cute little actor on Alf. Prayers for his family.
Just seeing this article almost a month after his passing??!! My sincere, truly heartfelt condolences to Gregory’s family and loved ones and to all the people who connected in any way with his dog and/or those who are dog lovers in general.🙏🏽 May their souls rest now in the peace and love of God.🙏🏽
Because the family didn’t release the info. No disrespect, but his name probably didn’t pop on any searches that websites may do.
Gregory is his middle name. His given name would have gone under the radar.
I know I’ve only just found out my prayers and wishes are with his family and friends R.I.P❤️❤️❤️
I rediscovered ALF on LAFF tv for the first time since I was a kid and it’s still pretty funny or may be it’s the kid in me that is reminiscing. He was very cute as a kid – same age as me which is a bit scary. Very sad to hear of his passing. May he RIP!!
Sad. I quite liked him on Alf.

This is terrible. Poor Benji and Hans. May they both rest in peace.

Oh hell no this is so sad poor kid …
Really enjoyed Alf. Sorry to hear he had a rough time after the show ended. Rest in peace.
This is heartbreaking. May he and his dog rest in peace.
God bless him and his family. I really hate to hear this tragedy. He is a beloved memory of my child hood, I love all his movies and shows, I have watched them all, everything he did was Great. My prayers are with him and his family.I hope he had a great life. RIP
It still bothers me that no one noticed a man and his dog dying in a hot car. Did no one else go near this bank, or come out for a break at all? And we will never know, perhaps, but if Benji died before the dog did, why did the dog not bark and alert passersby to their situation? The dog was his service dog. Or it was so hot they just both were too weak and maybe perished at the same time, more or less. Sad. RIP.
Most people going around running their own errands probably don`t pay too much attention if a grown man has fallen asleep in his car. If anyone noticed him, they probably thought he was just napping.
I told my future wife that I couldn’t come over because she different watch Alf. So I guess you see she change her mind. I love that show. Glad she change her mind. Been married 38 years come January.
I was shocked to know the passes away. My condolences to his family and friends
