Behind the Scenes
• | This Old House was created by Russell Morash who had previously produced The French Chef with Julia Child and The Victory Garden for PBS. The idea for the show, the first of its kind, came to Morash while remodeling his own 1851 farmhouse. |
• | Original host Bob Villa left the series in 1989 due to concerns over a conflict of interests once he began appearing in commercials for building products. In 1990, he began hosting a similar show, Bob Vila’s Home Again, and was a spokesman for Sears. |
• | This Old House was the inspiration for the “show-within-a-show” Tool Time on the sitcom Home Improvement. Tim Allen played a Vila-like character and Vila guest-starred on the series as Tim’s rival. Tim’s assistant Al Borland was based on Norm Abram. |
Watched this old house every time it was on I watched it on sky tv channel back in the 90s. I can’t tell you all enough how much this old house made an impression on me it was the start of my love of diy and has been ever since. I have not seen it for years now. But I still think about it as I do some new things I always think how would Norm do this .
A great show to learn to do things. Been watching this show for years. Best than any DYI show.
Please help us get our duct work cleaned. When they redid our house for a flip house, they took a bunch of short cuts. When they put new duct work in they never closed up the joints up and all the dust and insulation is coming in the house. Can you please help us?

I am recently divorced 5/28. I will get 1/2 of value of my Plantation home to buy a house. I have looked since 4/20 for one in Pompano Beach, fl. There is an old house 57 with original dark wood floors (4/3 with family room). It does not have kitchen cabinets or appliances. The bathrooms were redone with tile but no toilets and sinks. The windows have been replaced but need plaster around them. The family room and extra bedroom need tile. The house needs painting on the outside and inside. The air conditioner was on the roof, but I… Read more »
