The history of the University of Home Economics (UHE), Lahore dates back to 1955 when it was established as the College of Home Economics in partnership with Oklahoma University, USA, to assist in curriculum development and teacher training and to educate female students in various life skills. Within ten years of its foundation, the College started offering MSc, B.Ed, and C.T. courses.
A milestone development took place in the history of this institution on 8th February 2017 when the Punjab Assembly passed the Act to make it a public sector university. The first Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Kanwal Ameen joined the university on 31st May 2019 and under her guidance, the University embarked on the journey of becoming a university that prepares professionally equipped, cultured, and market-oriented graduates who can join various fields as professionals.
On 5th August 2023, Dr. Faleeha Zahra Kazmi took charge as Vice Chancellor of the University of Home Economics, and UHE has seen significant progress and development since then. Dr.Faleeha has focused on expanding the university’s academic offerings and improving infrastructure. Dr.Faleeha has implemented several initiatives to support students and faculty. Specialized centers, such as the Career and Placement Center, Independent Living Center for Special Needs, Begum Rana Liaquat Ali Khan Training Center, Financial Aid Office, Entrepreneurship hub, and Business Incubation Center have been set up to provide holistic support.
UHE has signed multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with national and international institutions, including Hakim Sabzevari University in Iran, National Languages Promotion Development (NLPD), Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), and Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry (WCCI). These collaborations aim to enhance academic exchange, cultural understanding and linkages with the industry.
With a diverse student body and dedicated faculty members, our institution is one of Lahore’s few female-only public sector universities. We play a pivotal role in ensuring access to quality education for women. Our university offers hostel facilities, accommodating both urban and rural women, ensuring diversity. Many of our students hail from first-generation college-going families, making our efforts crucial in advancing societal development and gender equality in higher education.
Our commitment to research and innovation is reflected in the multiple conferences hosted, such as the 3rd International Conference on Iqbal’s Ideology of Peace and Progress and the 2nd International Conference on Sustainable Development Goals. These initiatives underscore our focus on fostering an environment where research thrives and contributes to societal advancement.
Furthermore, our pedagogical approach is rooted in capacity building and the nurturing of entrepreneurial skills. This unique approach fosters academic excellence and also empowers female graduates to become health professionals, entrepreneurs, and social scientists equipped to bring about positive change in society.
To foster versatile growth of students through diversified learning based on teaching and research excellence with a view to groom them as empowered independent thinkers, professionals, entrepreneurs, researchers and compassionate individuals with a high sense of social responsibility, values, harmony and culture.
To create an environment that keeps the faculty, researchers and students motivated to give their best in the transference, generation, and acquisition of knowledge and stay committed to serve the community without any kind of biases.
