Foreword: This volume contains the proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Information Retrieval (KDIR 2019) which is part of the 11th International Joint Conference on Knowledge Discovery, Knowledge Engineering and Knowledge Management (IC3K 2019). IC3K was sponsored by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC) and held in Vienna, Austria, co-organized by Technische Universität Wien. IC3K was organized in cooperation with the ACM Special Interest Group on Artificial Intelligence, Associazione Italiana per l'Intelligenza Artificiale, Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence, The European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics and the Associação Portuguesa de Reconhecimento de Padrões (APRP). The main objective of IC3K is to provide a point of contact for scientists, engineers and practitioners interested in the areas of Knowledge Discovery, Knowledge Engineering and Knowledge Management. IC3K is composed of three co-located complementary conferences, each specialized in one of the aforementioned main knowledge areas. Namely: - International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Information Retrieval (KDIR) - International Conference on Knowledge Engineering and Ontology Development (KEOD) - International Conference on Knowledge Management and Information Systems (KMIS) The International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Information Retrieval (KDIR) aims to provide a major forum for the scientific and technical advancement of knowledge discovery and information retrieval. The joint conference, IC3K received 220 paper submissions from 57 countries in all continents, of which 22% were accepted as full papers. The high quality of the papers received imposed difficult choices in the review process. To evaluate each submission, a double blind paper review was performed by the Program Committee, whose members are highly qualified independent researchers in the three IC3K Conferences topic areas. KDIR 2019 received 81 paper submissions from 27 countries in all continents, of which 25% were presented as full papers. The high quality of the papers received imposed difficult choices in the review process. To evaluate each submission, a double blind paper review was performed by the Program Committee, whose members are highly qualified independent researchers in the KDIR topic areas. The conference also featured a number of keynote lectures delivered by internationally well-known experts, namely Eduard Babkin (National Research University “Higher School of Economics”, Russian Federation), Frank Hsu (Fordham University, United States), Heimo Müller (Medical University of Graz, Austria) and Robert Pergl (Czech Technical University in Prague, Czech Republic), thus contributing to increase the overall quality of the conferences and to provide a deeper understanding of the conferences interest fields. The IC3K program also included a tutorial: “How to Extract Knowledge from Communications: Combining Pragma-linguistics and Knowledge Engineering Techniques” lectured by Nada Matta (University of Technology of Troyes, France), Hassan Atifi (University of Technology of Troyes, France) and Nelson Tenório (Unicesumar, Brazil). Moreover, the conference also included a doctoral consortium co-chaired by David Aveiro (University of Madeira / Madeira-ITI, Portugal), Jorge Bernardino (Polytechnic of Coimbra - ISEC, Portugal) and Ana Salgado (Federal University of Pernambuco, Brazil). To recognize the best submissions and the best student contributions, awards based on the best combined marks of paper reviewing, as assessed by the Program Committee, and the quality of the presentation, as assessed by session chairs at the conference venue, are conferred at the closing session of the conference. As in previous editions of the conference, based on the reviewers’ evaluations and on the presentations, selected authors will be invited to submit extended versions of their papers for a book, which will be published by Springer with the best papers of IC3K 2019. All presented papers will be submitted for indexation by Thomson Reuters Conference Proceedings Citation Index (CPCI/ISI), DBLP, EI (Elsevier Engineering Village Index), Scopus, Semantic Scholar and Google Scholar as well as being made available at the SCITEPRESS Digital Library. Building an interesting and successful program for the conference required the dedicated effort of many people. We would like to express our thanks, first of all, to all authors including those whose papers were not included in the program. We would also like to express our gratitude to all members of the Program Committee and auxiliary reviewers, who helped us with their expertise and valuable time. Furthermore, we thank the invited speakers for their invaluable contribution and for taking the time to synthesize and prepare their talks. We also thank the tutorial lectures and the doctoral consortium chairs whose contribution to the diversity of the program was decisive. Finally, we gratefully acknowledge the professional support of the INSTICC team for all organizational processes. (More)
