Abstract: The contemporary practice of building information modeling (BIM) in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry introduces paradigms for semantically rich 3D digital building models. These are able to describe a building over the whole life cycle, from conception up to operation. Use cases include efficient resource management, documentation of buildings within digital platforms, and querying and exchange of information across the whole building portfolio of a stakeholder. These use cases may be hard to establish with current methodologies within AEC, due to heterogeneous data and missing linking technology. Therefore, methods and tools to process existing data and automatically generate semantic links to data in the Web are needed. We have developed such methods in the EU funded FP7 research project DURAARK. These include efficient methods for the analysis and processing of point clouds and related images in order to automatically extract meaningful geometric and s emantic information. In this paper, we show this for the domain of electrical installations and present a complete pipeline that creates a hypothesis of the placement of electrical lines from unstructured data. (More)
