Injuries Reported After Head-On Crash on Highway 101 near Laytonville
LAYTONVILLE, CA (August 9, 2021) — A semi-truck crash on Highway 101 south of Laytonville left at least one person injured Thursday afternoon.
According to the California Highway Patrol, at around 2:50 p.m., a semi-truck collided head-on with a blue sedan but did not say how the collision unraveled.
Officials requested a REACH air ambulance team to tend to the wounded. However, the extent of the injuries was not immediately known.
As a result of the collision, the front end of the semi-truck ended up 18 feet down an embankment. Its rear was right at the end of the roadway. The sedan, on the other hand, had serious damage. A tow truck removed the crushed car from the scene.
Additionally, 41 gallons of diesel and four gallons of motor oil spilled on the roadway. Emergency responders worked to clear the spill, resulting in one-lane traffic on Highway 101. Lanes in both directions reopened at about 8:41 p.m.
Trucks, buses, and other large vehicles are harder to maneuver, have more blind spots, and take a longer time to decelerate. Drivers need to be extra vigilant and observe safety at all times. Avoid distractions, know your blind spots, and keep a safe braking distance. Furthermore, buckle up for safety, always observe the speed limit, and be aware of dangerous tailgaters. Equally important, keep your equipment properly maintained to reduce the chance of breakdowns.
