How to find and craft Grandmaster Griffin Gear
A step-by-step walkthrough summary to help you quickly find all Grandmaster Griffin diagrams and craft the witcher gear set in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt's next-gen update! For more in-depth instructions, please refer to the full guide below.
Instructions
- (Optional) Go to Beauclair. Find the workshop of Lazare Lafargue northwest of the Mettina Gate signpost and talk to him to pick up the quest.
- Head to the Fort Ussar ruins. Defeat the two Draconids and get the Grandmaster Griffin steel sword, gauntlets and boots diagrams from the chest under the broken stairs.
- Go to Mont Crane castle north of Fort Ussar.
- Defeat the Hanse bandits there and enter the underground tunnels using the eye of Nehaleni.
- Power the portal with the crystal and pass through it.
- Defeat the Golem and loot the Grandmaster Griffin silver sword, armor and trousers diagrams.
- Head back to Lafargue's workshop and ask him to craft the Grandmaster Griffin witcher set for you. He is the only crafter in the entire game that can do it.
What is Grandmaster Griffin Gear and who is it for
The Grandmaster Griffin witcher set is for level 40 and is an upgrade to the Mastercrafted Griffin witcher gear (level 34).
It’s a medium armor set boosting Experienced earned, chance to cause bleeding as well as resistance to piercing, slashing, elemental, and monster damage.
Grandmaster is the highest tier of witcher gear in the game. At this tier, you get Set Bonuses. The more pieces of the same set you have equipped, the more bonuses you receive. More on that later in the guide.
You need to craft the Basic, Enhanced, Superior and Masterrcrafted armor and swords first as they are part of the requirements to craft the Grandmaster version. More on that in the Crafting Segment later in this guide.
How to start the Scavenger Hunt quest
To receive the quest and to be able to get the gear at all, you need to unlock and access Toussaint. This is the region added to The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt with its second expansion Blood and Wine. If you don’t own the expansion, you can’t get the quest and the gear.
When you get to Toussaint, find the workshop of Lazare Lafargue. It’s located north of the Mettina Gate signpost.
This is the only Grandmaster craftsman in the game. He is an Armorer and Blacksmith “2 in 1” . Talk to him and ask him about the Bear gear diagrams hidden somewhere in Toussaint. This will grant you the Scavenger Hunt quest for the six diagrams of the Grandmaster Wolven set.
You can start and complete this quest at a lower level. The opponents you will have to fight are nothing extraordinary. You will need to be level 40 to wear the gear, though.

Below you can see what the Grandmaster Griffin witcher set looks like as of the next-gen update when this guide was written. For this tier Geralt gets steel cover on the shoulder pads and under the belt area. The chain armor extends up to his neck and above the outer armor.
The color effect on the swords is a result of the inserted runes. Yours may vary. If you have no runes in the available slots, the swords are all silver color without the engravings.
You can dye the armor pieces in different colors. There is a merchant who sells dyes at the shores of Beauclair in Toussaint.
Where to find the Diagrams
The six diagrams (four for armor pieces and two for the silver and steel swords) are all located in Toussaint. In two locations not far from each other – Fort Ussar and Mont Crane.

Head to the Fort Ussar ruins, located to the far east on the map. It’s directly to the east of Corvo Bianco.
There is a Place of Power at this location as well. If this is your first visit, you will have to fight two Draconids there. Use Draconid Oil on your swords. Grapeshot is also handy in this fight.
If you are having trouble with the monsters’ spits, use Golden Oriole to turn the poison into a healing effect. Aard can also help knock them down for a second so you can land a couple of big hits.
At the top of the hill, among the ruins, under the stone staircase, you will find a chest containing a note (Captain Augustus Fierabras’ report) and the diagrams for the Grandmaster Griffin steel sword, gauntlets and boots.

The note you found inside the chest at Fort Ussar, gives you the clue for the next location you have to visit – the Mont Crane castle ruins.
From the Fort Ussar signpost, follow the path north through a beautiful small lush green canyon. After you exit on the other end, you will see the castle on the horizon. There may be three mounted bandits on the path.
The entrance is on the south side. A signpost is just a little to the south of the main gate of the castle. Mont Crane is a Hanse base.
The pause-screen note warns you, but in case you don’t believe it, let me join in the warning. This is a tough challenge. What’s even more annoying is that if you exit the base, some of the soldiers and (especially) the dogs may respawn and attack you again. This is a fight you should do in one take.
Tips on how to clear the castle and defeat the Hanse gang occupying it:
- Have an empty inventory. You will loot tons of items.
- Be ready with as many Bombs and Potions.
- Among the most helpful here are Grapeshot, Northern Wind and Dragon’s Dream bombs.
- From the Potions, you want to make sure you carry Swallow and White Raffard’s Decoction to restore health.
- Take care of the archers first.
- To completely clear the castle, climb the tower and defeat the main mini-boss up there.
- Loot everything! Even if you end up with twice the weight Geralt can carry. This is one of the best places to make money from in Toussaint without cheating the game.
The chest with the Grandmaster Griffin diagrams is in the underground tunnels. To discover the entrance, you need Nehaleni’s eye. This is an artifact you get from Keira Metz at the end of the main quest Wandering in the Dark in Velen.
On a wooden table in one of the tunnels, you will find a Power Cristal.
In the room next to the one where you found the crystal, there is a button you can press. Use your Witcher senses to find the exact location. This will reveal the inactive portal and a place where you should put the activating cristal.
After you have placed the activating crystal, step back and use Aard on it. This will activate the portal.
As you pass, Geralt will say his favorite line of how he hates Portals. On the other side is one of the many reasons why he feels that way about them. As soon as you exit the portal on the other side, a level 4- Golem will attack you.
The Golem is slow, but very deadly. Use Elementa Oil to boost the damage you deal with your silver sword. Quen is always helpful. Yrden can slow the Golem even further, but since these creatures are already very slow to move and their attack patterns are clearly visible, you should not really need the sign.
At the end of the cave, there is an old laboratory. Loot the Grandmaster Griffin diagrams there. Each item is in a different spot, but they are all close to each other.

How to Craft the Armor and Swords
After you have obtained all of the diagrams, bring them back to Lazare Lafargue. Below you can see the crafting requirements for each item and further down I have helpful information on where to find and how to get the rarest ingredients.
This is the highest tier of gear in the game. As a result of this, it is very expensive to craft and demands the rarest of materials.
Infused Slyzard Hide
Can be purchased from the Shopkeeper Lafargue. You can also craft it from Cured Draconid Leather and Infused Crystal. Both also craftable items.
Enriched Dimeritium Plate
Can be purchased from the Shopkeeper Lafargue. Can also be crafted from Enriched Dimeritium Ingot.
Enriched Dimeritium Ingot
Can be purchased from the Shopkeeper Lafargue. Can also be crafted from Enriched Dimeritium Ore, which can be crafted or purchased.
Before you resort to purchasing an expensive crafting material, make sure you don’t have a way to craft it. All of the above mentioned ingredients can be crafted.
The ingredients for those items are fairly cheap and easy to find and loot. Things like Dimeritium Ore and Orichalcum Ore are available for loot. Explore Toussaint and do some of the question-marked optional activities on your map to earn some coins and loot some crafting materials. The Hanse bases are wonderful places to do just that.
The rest of the items you can get by purchasing from alchemists, merchants, or armorers and blacksmiths. You can also get them by dismantling items at an armorer or blacksmith.
There is no doubt that this is an expensive witcher set. Not only the crafting ingredients are rare and expensive to obtain, but the crafting tax at the craftsman is steep as well.
Gear Stats and Set Bonus
The Grandmaster tier of witcher sets all have unique set bonuses. The more items of the same set you wear, the more bonuses you receive. Below you can read the set bonuses for equipping 3 and 6 of the Grandmaster Griffin items.
Bonus for 3 pieces:
After using Stamina to cast a Sign in its standard mode, the next Sign cast within 3 seconds will be cast in the standard mode without using Stamina.
Bonus for 6 pieces:
The size of Yrden traps is increased by 40%. While you are within an Yrden trap, Stamina regeneration is increased by 5/s and Sign Intensity by 100%, and damage is reduced by 20%.

How to get the Legendary Version of the Grandmaster Griffin Set
The Legendary Grandmaster Griffin School witcher gear set is available in New Game Plus (NG+) in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt. The Scavenger Hunt Quest and all diagrams are located in the exact same places as in the normal game.
The gear pieces require a much higher level to wear, of course. And the stats provided are higher.
