COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) --- The 44th annual Heritage Weekend kicks off tonight.

It's a celebration for a historical high school in South Carolina and in Columbia.

We're talking about Booker T. Washington High School.

The highlight of the celebration is the Class of 1943.

They'll be honored on their 75th Class Reunion.

According to Historic Columbia, In 1916, Booker T. Washington School started as an elementary school.

It became Columbia's only high school for black students in 1924.

Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, it attracted students from all over the state until it closed in 1974.
