Steamforged Games: Gearing Up for War: A Deep Dive into Warmachine's Top 3 Factions
If you’ve ever wanted to command hulking war robots, sling spells, and crush your enemies with tactical brilliance (or sheer brute force), Warmachine by Steamforged Games might just be your next tabletop obsession. For the uninitiated: Warmachine is a miniature wargame where steam-powered mechs (called warjacks) duke it out under the command of badass leaders known as warcasters. It’s set in the steampunk-fantasy world of the Iron Kingdoms, where magic and machinery collide in spectacularly explosive ways.
Warmachine is a fast-paced tabletop miniatures game that plunges players into a world of intense tactical combat and strategic planning. Set in the steampunk-inspired Iron Kingdoms, players command powerful warcasters and their mighty warjacks—mechanized constructs armed with devastating weaponry. Each faction boasts its unique abilities, units, and strategies, offering endless variety and replayability. With its rich lore, detailed miniatures, and competitive gameplay, Warmachine provides an exhilarating experience for both seasoned veterans and newcomers to the miniature wargaming scene. Dive into the battlefield and prove your prowess in this dynamic and engaging game of strategy and warfare.
Now, Warmachine has a bunch of factions, each with its own flavor, strengths, and attitude—but today, I’m shouting out the top three most popular ones that tend to make waves both on tabletops and in forums.
1. Cygnar – The Good Guys (Kinda)
If you’re into high-tech gear, lightning weapons, and well-rounded versatility, Cygnar is your crew. They're the Iron Kingdoms' most advanced nation when it comes to tech, and their warjacks are slick, efficient, and often packing some nasty ranged firepower. Strong ranged game, Jack-of-all-trades army style, Cool blue-and-gold aesthetic and High-tech wizardry meets military precision. Think Captain America meets Iron Man with a dash of steampunk. Discover more Cygnar here (link)
2. Khador – Cold, Red, and Ruthless
On the flip side, if you're all about big armor and bigger punches, Khador is the heavyweight champ. Their warjacks are like walking tanks—slow, but when they hit, they hit. Their troops are tough, cheap, and built to outlast.
Massive, durable warjacks, Powerful melee presence, Snowy Russian Empire vibes (red and iron everywhere) and That “unstoppable force” energy. In short grumpy bears with sledgehammers in a snowstorm, yelling in Russian. That’s the might of Khador, check them here (link)
3. Cryx – Undead with a Side of Horror
Need something darker and spookier? Enter Cryx, the necromantic nightmare faction. These guys are all about overwhelming enemies with undead hordes, soul-fueled warjacks, and backstabbing trickery. They're fast, fragile, and love making you regret your life choices.
Swarming tactics and sneaky plays, Arc nodes and spellcasting shenanigans, Skulls, chains, and creepy vibes galore and totally unique “undead cyborg” aesthetic Metal band made of skeletons sailing a ghost ship through a storm. They will ruin your day. Check these cruel creatures now here (link)
Final Thoughts
Whether you're new to Warmachine or a veteran thinking about switching it up, these three factions are fan-favorites for a reason. They each offer unique playstyles and a ton of character, so whatever vibe you're going for—noble tech-knights, iron-clad juggernauts, or death-metal necromancers—there’s a faction for you. So dust off your warcaster, roll up your sleeves, and get those jacks primed. The battlefield awaits!

Games Workshop: The Secret Sauce Behind Warhammer 40K?
Warhammer 40,000, often abbreviated as Warhammer 40K or simply 40K, is a tabletop miniature wargame created by Games Workshop. Since its debut in September 1987, it has grown into one of the most iconic and enduring science fiction franchises in gaming, literature, and pop culture.
Set in the 41st millennium, the universe of Warhammer 40K is a dystopian nightmare where countless factions wage endless war across a galaxy consumed by chaos. The Imperium of Man—an authoritarian, galaxy-spanning human empire—battles for survival against xenos (aliens), daemons, and heretics. Its most famous defenders, the genetically enhanced Space Marines, are both symbols of hope and instruments of brutal repression.
The Game Itself Is Deep and Strategic
The actual gameplay is constantly evolving. The rules are dense (but fun once you get the hang of them), and each faction plays differently. The rules are layered and tactical, Army building with points and factions. On the battlefield movement, positioning, and line-of-sight matter a ton as do the countless of synergies between units, psychic powers, stratagems, and command points which add lots of depth.
It rewards smart play and creative thinking, but it’s also forgiving enough for casual fun. The variety of the different factions keeps things fresh too: Shooting-heavy armies like Astra Militarum, Melee monsters like World Eaters and ever tricksy psychic factions like Thousand Sons or Eldar And with regular updates and codex releases, there’s always something new to learn or master.
Looking to start or expand your Warhammer 40K miniatures collection
Lore So Deep, It’s Basically a Black Hole
The Warhammer 40,000 universe is massive, dark, and absurdly detailed. It blends grimdark sci-fi with elements of fantasy, horror, and dystopia. Every faction has a rich backstory and unique motivations, and that gives players a reason to emotionally invest in the game. The universe blends futuristic science fiction with medieval aesthetics, mysticism, and moral ambiguity. There are no real "good guys"—only varying shades of darkness.
The Hobby Side Is a Whole Lifestyle
Painting miniatures, customizing models, building terrain — it's more than a game. It’s a full-blown creative outlet. People spend years building and painting armies, and there’s a huge community aspect to it, from hobby nights to online showcases. If you say “grimdark” or “There is only war,” people know what you mean. It’s got meme culture, fan fiction, podcasts, lore videos, tournament circuits… it’s like the Star Wars of tabletop games!
Beyond the tabletop game, the franchise has expanded into novels, video games, animations, and more. Notable titles like Dawn of War, Darktide, and the Horus Heresy book series have brought the grimdark setting to a wider audience. Whether you're a hobbyist painting armies, a reader diving into its lore, or a gamer battling across war-torn starscapes, Warhammer 40K offers an unmatched fusion of strategy, storytelling, and spectacle. In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war—and fans wouldn’t have it any other way.
Games Workshop Knows How to Market
GW has built an empire — literally. From official stores in malls to a massive social media presence and community engagement, they’ve made 40K feel accessible and elite. Not easy to pull off. And their other ventures (like Kill Team, Horus Heresy, novels, video games, even TV in the works) keep pulling people into the universe from different angles.
Conclusion
Warhammer 40,000 is more than just a tabletop game—it's a sprawling universe that weaves together rich lore, intense strategy, cutting-edge miniatures, and a passionate global community. From the grimdark narratives of eternal war and ancient rivalries to the thrill of customizing armies and battling across war-torn galaxies, 40K offers something for every kind of fan—whether you're a lore junkie, a painter, a gamer, or a collector.
It’s a franchise that invites both deep immersion and creative expression, constantly evolving while staying true to its dystopian roots. In the 41st Millennium, there is only war—but for fans, there’s also endless inspiration, camaraderie, and a place in one of the most enduring sci-fi worlds ever created!

Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings is a captivating tabletop miniature game developed by Para Bellum Wargames. Set in the richly imagined fantasy world of Eä, this game offers a unique blend of mass battles and skirmish-level engagements, catering to both seasoned wargamers and newcomers alike.
Gameplay Mechanics
Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings is designed to be accessible yet deeply tactical. The game features a rank and flank system, where players maneuver their units to gain strategic advantages on the battlefield. One of the standout features is its dynamic turn structure, which avoids rigid player turns, adding an element of unpredictability and excitement to each match.
A full game of Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings typically lasts under two hours, making it perfect for an evening of gaming. As players become more familiar with the rules, game duration can be as short as 40-60 minutes, allowing for multiple games in a single session.
Factions and Miniatures
The game boasts a diverse range of factions, each with its unique playstyle and lore. Some of the notable factions include: The Hundred Kingdoms: Inspired by the politics of the Holy Roman Empire, this faction represents a coalition of human nations with a rich medieval aesthetic. The Spires: A faction known for their advanced technology and elite units, reminiscent of ancient Greece and Greek mythos. The Yoroni: A newly introduced faction that brings a distinctly Japanese mythological flavor to the game, featuring stunning miniatures and unique mechanics.
Each faction comes with its own starter set, which includes a character to lead your army, a selection of units, and a paperback copy of the rules. This makes it easy for new players to dive into the game and start building their forces.
Conquest Two Player Starter Set - Sorcerer Kings vs City States - Grab a friend and dive into the world of Conquest: With proposed scenarios designed to ease you into the system of Conquest, the box contains a starter warband and a commander unit for each faction - Sorcerer Kings, our 8th and newest faction vs the Greek Army of the City States! These City States figures will take you back in time, with the highly detailed sculpting that ancient Greece is famous for. The Sorcerer Kings are a highly sculpted group of Wizards and Sorcerers who operate in the mysticism of the east. The set is ready for two players to clash on game tables.
W'adrhun: Tontorr - Tontorrs are amongst the largest beasts that the W’adrhun have managed to tame. Normally used as beasts of burden and to aid construction, when a tribe ceases raiding and mobilizes for war, the Tontorrs are often in the vanguard.
Conclusion
Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings stands out as a modern take on classic fantasy wargaming. With its engaging gameplay, diverse factions, and strong community support, it offers an immersive and enjoyable experience for both new and experienced players. Whether you're a seasoned wargamer or new to the hobby, this game has something to offer.

Snap Ships LLC: Snap Ships Tactics - Strategic Miniatures Battle Game Reviewed!
Today we will take a closer look at the Snap Ships Tactics strategic miniatures battle game from Snap Ships LLC designed by Lynnvander Studios featuring some excellent pre-painted plastic modular spaceships! Assemble your own spaceships from 100+ individual pre-painted plastic components and engage your enemies in deadly tactical combat using your own unique ship actions and more!
Snap Ships Tactics Starter Box
During this review we will take a look at the Snap Ships Tactics Starter Box which forms the core of the extensive Snap Ships Tactics gaming range next to their ship expansions and more gaming components. This starter box contains everything you need to play the game including rules, miniatures, tokens, dice and more. The full list is as following 100+ Plastic Ship Parts, 8 Chassis Cards and 24 AI Cards, 28 Part Cards, 10 Custom Dice, 2 Heavy Duty Flight Stands (2 heights), 2 Hull and Evasion Trackers, 2 Plastic Move tools, Terrain, ID, and Missile Tokens, 50 Energy and Heat Cubes and 3 Range Rulers.
The quality, design and artwork of the plastic and cardboard components is really top-notch! The only remark regarding the content, is that there's no space gaming mat included in the starter box although this is a minor point as those can easily be sourced from plenty of wargaming mat manufacturers. Good examples can be found here and here
Snap Ships Tactics Sabre and Scarab Spaceships
The starter box contains 2 highly modular spaceships, the Sabre and Scarab along with their plastic flying stands. These models are supplied in 100+ individual building blocks shared between the two models and can each be assembled in three different configurations offering plenty of possibilities and unique actions to add to the ship's control panel.
These models are the real selling point of this battle game, really fun and easy to assemble and loads of cool options to choose from. Did I mention that these awesome spaceships are simply huge! I love them but the large scale might be an issue when playing larger battles or when you're gaming space restricted. They could probably been made smaller but then you would certainly loose the cool modular approach and all the lovely options.
Each ship can be assembled from the many individual plastic building blocks of which the cubes supplied in both Forge Grey (Sabre) and Komplex Black (Scarab) form the base of each ship's construction. Next to these basic parts are many more detailled pre-painted pieces such as missiles, engines, wings, thrusters, exhausts, weapons and more. Each of these unique ship parts have their own Chassis and AI Cards and Part cards showing the unique actions they add to the ship's control panel.
Snap Ships Tactics Gameplay
The gameplay revolves around maneuvering ships on a free-form battlefield. Players allocate energy to their ship's systems to move, dodge, and fire various weapons. The goal is to destroy the opposing squadron's ships while taking advantage of the battlefield terrain. Snap Ships Tactics supports various game modes, including 1v1, solo play against an AI ship, and cooperative play.
Snap Ships Tactics has been compared to games like X-Wing Miniatures Game and Wings of Glory. However, it offers a distinct experience with less emphasis on movement templates and more focus on strategic maneuvering and energy allocation. The game is designed to be immersive and enjoyable, with a focus on creating a fun and engaging experience for players. The Snap Ships toy line, which the game is based on, has been praised for its wide appeal and the joy it brings to both kids and adults.
The Conclusion
Snap Ships Tactics offers a unique and engaging strategic miniatures battle game experience. With its modular and customizable ships, innovative game mechanics, and versatile game modes, it caters to a wide range of players. Whether you're a fan of tactical combat games or just looking for a fun and immersive gaming experience, Snap Ships Tactics has something to offer. Available at Barnes and Noble (online and in store) in the USA and also in the official store Grab your own copy here
