Negros Muscovados bruiser Germy Mahinay has been slapped with an indefinite suspension and a P100,000 fine for his dirty play against Zamboanga Master Sardines’ Rey Barcuma during their 2024 MPBL Season game on Monday night, April 22.

In an advisory, the MPBL said they took into consideration the gravity of Mahinay’s foul against Barcuma as well as his immediate reaction after the incident.

“Negros center Germy Mahinay has been suspended indefinitely for undercutting Joey Barcuma of Zamboanga Master Sardines while in the air,” the MPBL said in a statement.

“This outcome takes into account the dangerous nature of the play as well as Mahinay’s reaction immediately after the deplorable act,” it said.

“Additionally, Mahinay is fined P100,000 for his action,” it added.

In a video that went viral online, Barcuma was going for a fastbreak layup when Mahinay attempted to stop him by kneeing him from behind while airborne.

Barcuma fell awkwardly and remained on the floor for minutes, while Mahinay, with his finger raised as an acknowledgment of the hard foul, walked away from the scene as if nothing happened.

Consequently, Mahinay was given a disqualifying foul and ejected from the game, while Barcuma was substituted out and did not return.

Meanwhile, the Iloilo United Royals sustained their third consecutive defeat (1-3) after a 106-78 beating of the San Juan-Go for Gold Knights (2-0) at the FilOil EcoOil Arena in San Juan City on Thursday night, April 25.

Orlan Wamar, Jr. finished with 24 points, including five three-point conversions. AC Soberano and Zachary Huang added 13 and 12 markers, respectively, while Negrense Reynel Hugnatan, Dexter Maiquez and Marwin Taywan ended with 11 each.

CJ Cansino top-scored for the slumping United Royals with 19 points, Ry dela Rosa added 11 markers, and Ilonggo Clint Doliguez contributed 10 points./ASC, WDJ
