How To Determine Rug Size For A Room? – Rug Size For Room Calculator

Here’s a step-by-step tutorial on how to measure rug size for a room:

How To Determine Rug Size For A Room
Rug Size For A Room
  1. Measurement: Measure the length and width of your room or furniture. Go to our rug size calculator and choose either the “Inside a Room” or “Around Furniture” tab based on your measurement.
  2. Style: Select your desired Rug Style from the drop-down menu. For example, if you want a circular rug, choose “Circle.”
  3. Location: Choose a location where you want to put the rug for more accurate results. This step is optional, but we recommend you choose one. For example, if you want to put the rug in your living room, select “Living Room.”
  4. Calculation: Enter the measured value of the width into the Width field and select the measurement unit you used. For example, if you measured your room in feet and the width of your room is 14 ft, enter “14” and select “ft.”
  5. Uncover Area: If there are areas you want to avoid and keep uncovered by the rug, use the “Space Won’t Be Covering” field to put a perimeter around those areas; it’s totally optional. For example, if you want 2 sq.ft. of area to be uncovered where your fireplace is located, enter “2”and select “ft²” in the field. We are not going to use this field for the sake of this guide.
  6. Result: Once you’ve completed these steps, you should see the “Rug Area” result under the calculator. Based on the calculations, you’ll be able to determine the perfect custom rug size for your room.
    For the example above, the Rug Area result is 153 sq. ft., so we’ll need a rug of that size to cover our desired amount of space.

Check out the formula of area rug size calculator which is used to determine the Rug Area for a better understanding and values are used from the examples above,

Area = 3.141592 * (Width/2)^2
Area = 3.141592 * (14/2)^2
Area = 3.141592 * 49
Area = 153 sq. ft
.

How to measure Rug size that will sit around furniture?

When determining the size of a rug to place under or around a piece of furniture, a specific formula can be used for accurate calculations. The formula is: Area = (Length+8) x (Width+8).

Area = (Length+8) x (Width+8)

By adding 8 inches to both the length and width of the furniture, this formula takes into account the ideal amount of space needed for the rug to properly fit and accommodate the furniture.

For example,

let’s say we have a couch that is 9 feet or 108 inches long and 3 feet or 36 inches wide and we want to find the perfect size rug to place underneath it. To calculate this, we would convert the measurements to inches and plug them into the formula:

Area = (Length+8) x (Width+8)
Area = (108+8) x (36+8)
Area = 116 x 44
Area = 5104 sq. inches or 35.44 sq. ft.

This means that the custom rug size we need is 35.44 square feet. By using this formula, you can determine the exact size of rug needed to fit your furniture perfectly, ensuring that it looks and feels just right in your space.

How does our calculator work?

Our rug size calculator uses formulas to provide the most accurate and customized rug size for your needs. Here are some of the formulas we use:

For A Room:

  • Rectangular, Runner or Square: Area(r)=Length(r)×Width(r)
  • Circle: Area(r)=π × (W(r)2)2
  • Oval: Area(r)=π × (L(r)2×W(r)2)
  • Octagon: Area(r)=Wr×0.4142×4.83

Note: If you have any space you don’t want to cover than that amount of space will be considered as Uncovered Area and subtracted from the length and width value.

Around a Room:

  • Rectangular, Runner or Square: Area(r)=(Length(r)+8)×(Width(r)+8)
  • Circle: Area(r)=π × (W(r)+82)2
  • Oval: Area(r)=π × (L(r)+82×W(r)+82)
  • Octagon: Area(r)=(W(r)+8)×0.4142×4.83

To use these formulas, you need to input the following values:

  • Area: the total area that you want to cover with the rug
  • r: the radius of the circle or oval rug
  • Length: the length of the room or furniture that you want to cover with the rug
  • Width: the width of the room or furniture that you want to cover with the rug
  • Uncovered Area: the area that you want to keep uncovered by the rug (if any)

By using these formulas and providing the necessary input values, our rug size calculator can determine the perfect rug size for you.

Rug Pad Size Calculator

The formula for such a Rug Pad Size Calculator as follows:

Rug Pad Size = Rug Length + 2 x Overlap Margin
Rug Pad Width = Rug Width + 2 x Overlap Margin

In these formulas:

  • Rug Length is the length of the rug you want to place the rug pad under.
  • Rug Width is the width of the rug.
  • Overlap Margin is the amount of additional space you want the rug pad to extend beyond the edges of the rug for better grip and protection.

The multiplication by 2 in each formula accounts for the overlap on both sides of the rug. The resulting values give you the dimensions of the rug pad that would suit the specified rug size. Adjust the overlap margin based on your preference or specific needs.

How do I calculate rug size?

Calculating the ideal rug size for a room depends on the room’s dimensions, the furniture layout, and the desired effect. Here are some general guidelines to help you determine the right rug size for your space:

1. Measure your room

Start by measuring the length and width of your room. Use a tape measure or a laser measure for accuracy.

2. Consider furniture placement

Think about how your furniture is arranged or how you would like to arrange it. Common rug placements include all furniture legs on the rug, front legs on the rug, or no furniture legs on the rug. The placement will impact the size of the rug you need.

3. Determine the rug size based on room dimensions

  • Living room: For a living room, the living room rug should be large enough to fit all furniture legs on the rug, with approximately 12-18 inches of space between the rug and the walls. Alternatively, you can have only the front legs of your furniture on the rug, which creates a more intimate seating arrangement. In this case, ensure that the rug extends at least 6 inches beyond the front legs of your furniture.
  • Dining roomMeasure your dining table and add 24-36 inches on each side to determine the minimum dining room rug size. This extra space ensures that chairs can be pulled out comfortably without falling off the rug.
  • Bedroom: The rug should extend at least 24 inches beyond the sides and foot of the bed. For a queen-size bed, a rug measuring 8′ x 10′ rug is usually suitable, while a king-size bed typically requires a 9′ x 12′ rug. Alternatively, you can use smaller rugs on either side of the bed, with no rug under the bed itself.

4. Visualize the rug size

Before purchasing a rug, use painter’s tape or newspaper to mark the rug’s dimensions on your floor. This will help you visualize how the rug will look in your space and confirm that you have chosen the right size.

Remember, these guidelines are just a starting point.

What Rug Size Do I Need?

Choosing the right rug size for your space is crucial for creating a well-balanced room. The rug size you need will depend on the size of the room and the furniture arrangement.

Here is a general guide to help you find the perfect rug size for your space, along with a table for quick reference.

1. Living Room

  • Small: 5′ x 8′ or 6′ x 9′ rugs work well in smaller living rooms where only the front legs of the furniture rest on the rug.
  • Medium: 8′ x 10′ rugs are ideal for medium-sized living rooms where all the furniture fits comfortably on the rug.
  • Large: 9′ x 12′ or larger rugs work well in spacious living rooms where all the furniture, including side tables, can fit on the rug.

2. Dining Room

  • The rug should extend at least 24-36 inches beyond the edges of the dining table to accommodate chairs.
  • Measure the length and width of your table, and add 48-72 inches to both dimensions to find the ideal rug size.

3. Bedroom

  • For queen beds: 8′ x 10′ rugs are a popular choice, with the rug extending beyond the bed on three sides.
  • For king beds: 9′ x 12′ rugs work well, providing ample coverage on both sides and at the foot of the bed.

4. Hallways and Entryways

Runner rugs: Choose a rug that is 2-3 feet wide and long enough to cover the majority of the hallway rug or entryway length:

Rug size calculator for sectional

Rug size calculator for sectional
  • Measure the dimensions of your sectional sofa, including the length and width (or depth).
  • Determine the layout of your living space, as this will impact the rug size. Common layouts include:
    • a. All legs of the sectional on the rug
    • b. Only front legs of the sectional on the rug
    • c. No legs of the sectional on the rug

Based on the layout you’ve chosen, follow these recommendations:

All legs on the rug

  • Add 24-36 inches to both the length and width of your sectional dimensions. This will ensure that the rug is large enough for all the legs to rest on the rug comfortably while providing some extra space around the sectional.
  • Example: If your sectional is 120″ x 90″, look for a rug that is approximately 144″ x 126″ (12′ x 10’6″) or larger.

Front legs on the rug

  • Add 12-18 inches to the length and width of your sectional dimensions. This will ensure that the rug extends just beyond the front legs of the sectional, creating a visually cohesive space.
  • Example: If your sectional is 120″ x 90″, look for a rug that is approximately 132″ x 108″ (11′ x 9′) or larger.

No legs on the rug

  • Choose a rug that is smaller than your sectional dimensions. This is ideal for smaller living spaces or when you want the rug to serve as an accent piece.
  • Example: If your sectional is 120″ x 90″, look for a rug that is smaller than 120″ x 90″, such as 96″ x 72″ (8′ x 6′).

Keep in mind that these are general guidelines and may need to be adjusted based on the specific dimensions of your living space and personal preferences. It is always a good idea to use painter’s tape or a bed sheet to visualize the rug size in your space before making a purchase.

Rug size calculator for dining room

Rug size calculator for dining room
Rug size for dining room

A rug size calculator can help you determine the ideal rug size for your dining room. The right-sized rug can add comfort, style, and a sense of balance to your dining area. Here’s a simple guide to help you calculate the appropriate rug size for your dining room:

  • Measure the length and width of your dining table.
  • Add 24 to 30 inches (61 to 76 cm) to both the length and width measurements. This additional space allows for chairs to be pulled out without falling off the edge of the rug. The amount of space you choose depends on the size of your dining room and your personal preference.

For example, if your dining table measures 72 inches long and 36 inches wide:

  • Add 24 to 30 inches to the length: 72 + 24 = 96 inches (or 72 + 30 = 102 inches)
  • Add 24 to 30 inches to the width: 36 + 24 = 60 inches (or 36 + 30 = 66 inches)

Based on this example, an ideal rug size for your dining room would be approximately 8′ x 5′ (96″ x 60″) or 8.5′ x 5.5′ (102″ x 66″).

If your dining area is part of a larger room or an open floor plan, consider the overall dimensions and layout of the space. You may need to adjust the rug size to create a balanced look and define the dining area within the larger space. Remember that these measurements are a general guideline and personal preferences may vary.

When in doubt, it’s always best to use painter’s tape or a similar material to mark the rug’s dimensions on the floor. This will help you visualize how the rug will fit in your dining room before making a purchase.

Why rug is used in living room?

Why rug is used in living room
Image: stylebyemilyhenderson

Rugs are used in living rooms for several reasons:

  • Aesthetic appeal: Rugs can add color, texture, and visual interest to a living room, enhancing the overall interior design. They can tie together different elements in the room, creating a cohesive look, or act as a focal point to draw the eye.
  • Comfort:  A rug can provide cushioning and warmth underfoot, especially on hard flooring surfaces like wood, tile, or concrete. This added comfort makes the living room more inviting and enjoyable for family members and guests.
  • Noise reduction: Rugs can help absorb sound and reduce noise in the living room, creating a quieter, more relaxing environment. This is particularly beneficial in homes with open floor plans or high ceilings, where sound can easily travel and echo.
  • Protection: Rugs can protect the flooring underneath from spills, scratches, and general wear and tear. This is especially important in high-traffic areas like the living room, where furniture is often moved and people frequently gather.
  • Defines space: In open-concept homes or large living rooms, rugs can help define separate areas, such as a sitting area, a play area, or a space for conversation. This can make the room feel more organized and visually appealing.

Overall, rugs in living rooms serve both functional and aesthetic purposes, contributing to the comfort and style of the space.
