Half the fun of cruising with kids is exploring family-friendly ports of call. Royal Caribbean International upped the ante with its new Coco Beach Club on Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas.
The Coco Beach Club, the cruise line’s new private island retreat, is the final phase of a $250 million transformation, including the first floating cabanas in the Bahamas, an oceanfront infinity pool, on-beach cabanas, a dedicated restaurant with upscale dining and a bar.
Other amenities at Perfect Day at CocoCay include the opening of two rehabbed beaches — Breezy Bay at Chill Island and South Beach — open to all guests on the island.
Each of the 20 floating cabanas features a private slide into the ocean, an overwater hammock, a dining area, a freshwater shower, a wet bar and ocean views. There also are 10 beach cabanas, which can each accommodate up to eight guests and feature loungers, a dining area, charging outlets, a mini-fridge, snorkel gear and the services of a dedicated cabana attendant from whom guests can order drinks and food.
In addition to the bar at the clubhouse, families can enjoy the 2,600-square-foot, oceanfront infinity pool with in-pool loungers, daybeds and poolside service.
The main restaurant, available only to beach club guests, serves a complimentary menu with such options as fresh lobster, grouper and steak, as well as appetizers, salads and fruits.
The revamped South Beach features volleyball and beachside basketball, as well as a Snack Shack, three bars — including the floating bar just offshore — and 10 new beachfront cabanas.
The $250 million transformation of the line’s private island in the Bahamas also includes Thrill Waterpark, which boasts 13 waterslides, including the tallest in North America; Oasis Lagoon, the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean; and Up, Up & Away, a helium balloon ride offering the highest vantage point in the Bahamas at 450 feet.
The first in Royal Caribbean’s new Perfect Day Island Collection of private island destinations around the world, Perfect Day at CocoCay welcomed its first guests in May 2019.
Of course, the other half of the cruise experience takes place on the ship itself, and Royal Caribbean has made a name for itself with its award-winning Adventure Ocean youth programs. Aquanauts, aged 3–5, can have fun conducting cool experiments and becoming Certified Jr.
Adventure Scientists, while Explorers, for ages 6–8, and Voyagers, aged 9–11, can join in age-appropriate activities and themed parties. Babies and tots have their own programs — a parent or caregiver must be present — and teens and tweens are not forgotten with their own games, sports and parties.
Royal Caribbean International offers itineraries to more than 270 destinations in 72 countries on six continents.

Dec 24, 2024Celebrate New Year’s in Los Angeles
Los Angeles is always a fun city to explore, but when New Year’s Eve rolls around, there seems to be no end to the ways family travelers can enjoy the City of Angels. If you want to enjoy the fresh air (although it may get a bit nippy by Southern California standards with temps getting down to the 40s and 50s), it is still fairly warm for visitors from some other parts of the country. Head to Pershing Square in the heart of downtown LA, where the area has been transformed into an outdoor ice-skating rink for the holidays.
