English: Live cell of the pennate diatom Cylindrotheca closterium (Ehrenberg) Reimann and J.C.Lewin, 1964. North Sea, Helgoland Roads Phytoplankton Monitoring. Collection date: 2010-03-18.

Cells with long extended acicular edges which can be curved or slightly sigmoid, central part of the cell spindle shaped. Two chloroplasts present. Slime production during Cylindrotheca blooms is thought to be harmful for fisheries.

Size:

Total length (apical axis): 30-400 µm
Length of cell body: 6-50 µm
Width (transapical axis): 2.5-8 µm

Distribution:

The species is cosmopolitan. It can be found in plankton and also on substrates like seaweeds.
