Formatter URL different for private schools
[edit]Notified participants of WikiProject Education Unfortunately the existing formatter URL for this property seems to be for public schools only. A working formatter URL for private schools looks like https://nces.ed.gov/globallocator/sch_info_popup.asp?Type=Private&ID=00346865, but putting that school ID into the existing formatter URL gives you https://nces.ed.gov/ccd/schoolsearch/school_detail.asp?ID=00346865, which returns a 500 Error. So we could find some better formatter URL that works for all schools, or scope this property to public schools only (and maybe make a new property), or something else. Thoughts? - I genuinely didn't realize the NCES collected data on private schools. I'm inclined to use a new property, because the data seems to be housed in two different databases on the NCES side (Private School Universe Survey vs. Common Core of Data). It seems that the private school identifiers are shorter than the public school ones, so it shouldn't be too hard to migrate existing uses, such as Covington Catholic High School (Q2493240), by bot. - @Vahurzpu: I started adding NCES IDs to other private schools. I've noticed too that private school NCES IDs begin with "A". WhisperToMe (talk) 06:05, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
Multiple NCES IDs are possible
[edit]Hello! Q5289259 has two NCES IDs, 050541000253 (as a part of the Dollarway district) and 050002600253 (as a part of the Pine Bluff district) as the school had changed districts. But the field doesn't accept multiple NCES IDs. What should be done? WhisperToMe (talk) 20:51, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, Notified participants of WikiProject Education, can anyone advise? TSventon (talk) 01:39, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
- If the school has changed districts, that suggests that one ID is no longer in use and should be removed -- though I know that removing data is not always supported. If both will be included, the qualifiers as they appear in the item make sense to me. Another consideration would be see if there is another property that could be used to reflect that the school used to be part of the Dollarway district that doesn't involve IDs, and remove the ID no longer in use. I try to think of how it will impact queries; if the older ID isn't going to be used anymore I don't know what value it brings to the item. The fact that it has changed districts is valuable, however. Kind data (talk) 01:56, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
- @WhisperToMe: Since the old ID was once correct, you should assign "preferred" rank to the current one, and leave the old ID with normal rank. See Help:Ranking for how this works. If you know the start date you can add that as a qualifier. You probably should also add start/end date qualifiers to its association with the two school districts. - Resolved Reopen if this is not clear, but we have a recommendation here. Bluerasberry (talk) 14:15, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
- I'm wondering why the single value property restraint exists for this ID if we will allow for depreciated values resulting in more than one ID being allowed per item. We could include the preferred rank even if the single value restraint didn't exist. Thank you! Kind data (talk) 12:22, 19 September 2024 (UTC)

- @ArthurPSmith: Thanks for the advice! I set the Pine Bluff one as the preferred one. The Pine Bluff ID would have started in 2021 WhisperToMe (talk) 02:02, 27 September 2024 (UTC)
