chronological designation
[edit]Originally proposed at Wikidata:Property proposal/Generic
Description | as a typical instance, the stated scholarly journal year to which reference is made by: the reference source being cited to support the statement being made; cf. pro anno, "for the year"; this may not be the same as publication date (P577) or volume (P478). cf. MARC 21 (Q3919686) [1] |
---|---|
Represents | chronological designation (Q122425996) |
Data type | Point in time |
Example 1 | stated in (P248) = Novi Commentarii Academiae Scientiarum Imperialis Petropolitanae (Q6046009), volume (P478) = 13, publication date (P577) = 1769, chronological designation = 1768 [2] |
Example 2 | (re first valid description (Q1361864) [3] of Assam macaque (Q738925)): stated in (P248) = Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London (Q19622568), volume (P478) = Part VII, publication date (P577) = March 1840 (Q122426042: [4]), chronological designation = 1839 [5] (contrast between bibliographic reference date & actual publication date: [6], [7]) |
Example 3 | stated in (P248) = Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London (Q19622568), volume (P478) = 2, issue (P433) ("Part") = 1, publication date (P577) = October 1901 [8], as also per Q54800900, chronological designation = 1901 [9] (this same tranche is referred to by Wiley (Q1479654) as "Volume 71, Issue 1" [10], [11], perhaps an artefact of their counting methodology); also, volume (P478) = 2, issue (P433) ("Part") = 2, publication date (P577) = April 1902, chronological designation = 1901 [12] |
Planned use | For differentiation of volume (P478), publication date (P577), and "chronological designation" on references and reference items |
See also | volume (P478), publication date (P577) |
Motivation
[edit]To be able to distinguish chronological designation ≠ volume ≠ publication date and enter accurately the related bibliographic data; high impact for taxon citations (which follow the actual publication date) and references; thank you, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 10:59, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
Discussion
[edit]- Support Chronological designation is also an important property in serials cataloging, where we state the numeric or alphanumeric designation of the earliest part along with its chronological designation, and, for ceased serials, also the numeric/alphanumeric designation and chronological designation of the last part. This data is recorded in MARC 21 bibliographic field 362 (https://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd362.html). An example of a serial that ceased after only 3 issues: Vol. 1, no. 1 (Apr. 1983)-v. 1, no. 3 (June 1983). The chronological designations associated with the volume numbering is enclosed in parentheses in MARC records. AdamSeattle (talk) 21:23, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
- Comment I think the third example needs to be a specific example of what would be used in an item. You could not record publication date (P577) = various in an item. Give the specific publication date and the specific chronological designation of the issue being cited. AdamSeattle (talk) 21:42, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
- Have done so, thank you, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 22:43, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
- Support I think we may wish to use this property on video games too. For instance, FIFA Football 2002 (Q2420183) was published in 2001, but its chronological designation would be 2002. Notified participants of WikiProject Video games --Sanqui (talk) 15:59, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
- Right, I had been wondering for a long time how we should indicate the 2002 in Fifa 2002. Jean-Fred (talk) 16:09, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
- Support This would be helpful for WPVG. -wd-Ryan (Talk/Edits) 20:57, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
- Support Agreed on this point. OmegaFallon (talk) 21:26, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
- Support Yes, that would be useful for video games. Sir Lothar (talk) 10:45, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
- Support Makes sense to me for video games. Nicereddy (talk) 23:37, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Maculosae tegmine lyncis, AdamSeattle, Sanqui, Jean-Frédéric, Wd-Ryan, OmegaFallon: @Sir Lothar, Nicereddy: Done: chronological designation (P12044). Please kindly tweak all 3 examples (if required) as they were originally incorrectly structured in this proposal and caused confusion when I was creating this property.
