European Colonialism from the 15th century onwards is an important chapter in global history. Their effects can still be observed today. Many people, corporations, social groups and events are linked to it. Wikidata also offers the possibility of naming those actors or events that are otherwise given little space by a more or less Eurocentric historiography.

The goals of the WikiProjekt are:

  • To discuss recommendation for describing actors, events, objects and places related to the topic of European Colonialism.
  • To coordinate the input of data on the topic.
  • To provide the Wikidata part of a still to create Wikimedia user group on the topic.

Basic consideration

[edit]

The most comprehensive set of definitions of colonial rule in this project describes all territories outside Europe which were founded by European powers as colonies from 1420 onwards. The colonizing actors are organized by the state or act with the consent of a European state.

  •  How do we deal with charter companies?
  •  How do we deal with colonial powers outside Europe?
  •  What's about mandate territories and UN trust territories?

The underlying relationship is that between colonial power (Q20181813) located in Europe (Q46) and colony (Q133156) outside Europe (Q46). No matter how many colonies a colonial power has, each one is a part of an specific instance of colonial empire (Q1790360).

Both the colonial power and the colonies could have predecessor (replaces (P1365)) and successor (replaced by (P1366)) objects.

Do we really need to define the history of a region outside Europe always via the relationship to their respective colonial power?

[edit]

This concerns data objects related to more than one colonial power

How to describe them in relation to the main topic European colonialism (Q17631847)?

[edit]

We have actors, objects and places which are mostly related to one specific colonial empire. Many of them are located at the motherland.
