MAV as an expression of accidentally saying/posing on a Mu* probably orginiates from Mavra on FurryMuck, she was oft for accidentally posing and saying things that she had intended her puppet to say.

BZZT. Wrong. Mav comes from Maverick, who was also a mudder, but was never on Furry. I'm copying and pasting bits from an e-mail dated 20 August 1998 to a MUSH mailing list (Hi, Kynn!):

In truth, the word 'mav' was coined after a fellow on one of the early tinymuds (explanation follows) who was named, oddly enough, 'Mav'. (He originally was named Maverick but shortened it pretty early on.) This poor fellow was infamous for broadcasting his whispers, back 8 or 9 years ago, and got so well known for this that whenever anyone else did it, they'd call it "a mav".

[Ed note: That would have been about 1990.] [snip]

Mav was not a furry player -- the first statement, claiming the "Mis-Appropriated Verb" derivation, is completely inaccurate. 'MAV' is not an acronym at all, but simply a word named after the player Mav. (Who still plays on DinoMUSH these days; I was talking to him today, in fact.)
