The Barnum's were the most prominent family in Pembroke. Mrs. Capitola Barnum, for which Capitola Rd is named, was among the leading landowners in Danbury, transferred title to 778 acres and buildings to her son and grandson, George C. Barnum and George C. Barnum Jr. Most of the property is at Jeanette Heights and in Pembroke District.[1]

Thomas Barnum was one of the first eight settlers in the town of Danbury in 1684.

The land that the prison was built on previously belonged to the Barnum's.[2]

The Peck family also has a street named after them in Pembroke (Clayton Peck).

People were very concerned about their lakefront property values when the decision was being made about the new prison location.[3]

The majority of the coastline is occupied by the prison and Bear Mountain Reservation, a 140 acre park with several hiking trails.

There are three reservoirs in Pembroke, Margerie Lake Reservoir, East Lake Reservoir, and Padanaram Reservoir. The only residential lakefront section of Pembroke is a community called Candlewood Pines, almost all of which is owned by a New York City based private equity company.[4] To the dismay of the local community, plans to move forward with development of the land were approved in 2008. It is the largest tract of undeveloped land on Danbury's portion of Candlewood Lake. The same company that owns the Candlewood Pines tract is also the company responsible for Poets Landing in Hayestown.

At one point, the Waterbury Republican reported that Aristotle Onassis has considered purchasing this land.[5] Ironically, one of Bear Mountain's trails is named after John F. Kennedy.

This is also the location of Neversink Point which is where Neversink, the natural body of water replaced by Candlewood Lake, was originally located.
