He is best known for his theories about the importance of ideas in international relations and particularly for his theories about "epistemic communities." An epistemic community is a group of individuals who share a way of thinking about the world. An example would be the community of environmentalists. That community would include thinkers of various sorts who might disagree on specific matters but who share a concern for protecting the global environment. Haas came to this idea in studying global environmental politics but the concepts he created have been applied in many other areas. |
