Badrunnesa Dalia (Bengali: বদরুন্নেসা ডালিয়া; known as Dalia) is an award winning Bangladeshi Mainstream Nazrul Geeti[2] and Rabindra Sangeet[3] singer, performer and a private music tutor.[1] She is noted for her versatility as a multi-genre artist (singer).[1]

Early life and background

Dalia was born in Narsingdi in 1970. Her elder brother Asiful Huda[4] is a cartoonist in Bangladesh. Her younger brother Sumon Rahat is also a singer. In 1988, Dalia married BCS Bureaucrat Al-Nuri Faizur Reza. Dalia is a mother of two sons. She took lessons in classical music from Ustad Mofizul Islam and Abinash Goswami. Later, she learned Nazrul Sangeet from Sudhin Das and Sohrab Hossain.[1]

Career

Dalia has been a singer of Bangladesh Betar since 1996.[1] She has been an enlisted artist of Bangladesh Television since 1988. She has performed at numerous programs organized by cultural organizations, institutions and academies in Bangladesh, including Bangla Academy[1], Shilpakala Academy[1] , Chhayanat[5][6] , Nazrul Institute[1], Nazrul Academy[1], Nazrul Sangeet Shilpi Parishad (NSSP)[7][8] , Bangladesh Sangeet Sangathan Samannay Parishad (BSSSP)[9], Srijon (a cultural organization)[10][11],Bangladesh Rabindra Sangeet Shilpi Shangshad (BRSSS).[3][1] On 23 October 2004, the national daily The Daily Star published a special feature under it's culture page, titled "A rare passion for Nazrul and Rabindranath".[1] She simultaneously practiced and performed both Nazrul Geeti and Rabindra Sangeet.[1]

As an activist

Dalia was involved in a movement along with many other renowned artists to secure a better treatment and to save life of two legendary singers of Bangladesh- Sheikh Jomir Uddin and Madan Golap Dash. She participated in a press conference arranged by the Artists' Organization of Bangladesh Television at Shilpakala Academy premises, making the demand for better treatment to save lives of the two legendary artists. The event got good media attention and coverage.[12][13]

Performance highlights

  • Dalia performed in a musical program held at Begum Sufia Kamal Auditorium, Bangladesh National Museum titled "Pheley Asha Diner Gaan". The program observed Rabindranath Tagore's death anniversary (August 7).[10]
  • She performed a Kirtan- "Shokhi ami na hoy maan korechhinu" at the celebration program of the national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam in 2008. The program took place in the Shawkat Osman Auditorium, Central Public Library (Dhaka).[7]
  • Performed in a program titled "Bijoy Ullash" held at Poet Sufia Kamal Auditorium, Bangladesh National Museum. Dalia rendered "Moner rangey rangabo" and the SD Burman classic "Tumi esheychhiley porshu".[11]
  • Dalia performed in Chhayanat's two day festival, "Nazrul Utsab 1416" at the Chhayanat Sanskriti Bhaban in June 2009 on the occasion of president Sufia Kamal's birthday.[16]
  • In observance of the World Music Day 2011, Bangladesh Sangeet Sangathan Samannay Parisad (BSSSP) arranged a program at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) premises on 21 June 2011. The program was titled with the theme "Esho Bishwa Ke Melao Sur-er Oikotaan-e". Dalia rendered solos in the event.[17]
  • On the 112th birth anniversary of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, the cultural organization Nazrul Sangeet Shilpi Parishad (NSSP) organized a five-day festival titled "Nazrul Utsab 2011". The event was held at the auditorium of the Music and Dance Department of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA). Dalia rendered solos during the festival.[8]
  • Dalia rendered solos in a two day celebration program organized by Chhayanat Shangskriti Bhaban marking the 113th birth anniversary of the national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. The event started from 25 May 2012 at the main auditorium of Chhayanat.[3][18][19]
  • Along with many of the legendary artists in Bangladesh, Dalia performed in a program organized by the "International Nazrul Practice Center" (Bengali: আন্তর্জাতিক নজরুল চর্চা কেন্দ্র). The program was held at Shilpakala Academy premises in 2013.[20]
  • On 27 September 2013, "Bangladesh Rabindra Sangeet Shilpi Shangshad (BRSSS)" held a musical program and discussion at "Shawkat Osman Memorial Auditorium" of Central Public Library (Dhaka) where Dalia rendered a melancholic Rabindra Sangeet “Dibosho Rajoni”.[3]
  • Dalia has performed in many countries outside Bangladesh, for instance, India, Morocco etc.

Songs

Dalia has released solo albums, titled "Shornali Shondhay" (golden oldies) and “Ektuku Chhnoya Lagey” (Tagore songs). She has also released songs in many other mixed albums - “Laal Golap” (modern songs), “Oshru Jhora February”, “Jonmobhumi Ma” (patriotic songs) etc. to name a few. She aspires to bring out albums on Nazrul Sangeet and folk album featuring Lalon and Radharaman songs. She is more of a live performer.[1][21][22]

Awards

Dalia won the Bangladesh Shishu Academy National Awards twice in Nazrul Geeti (1983) and Rabindra Sangeet (1984).[1]
