Birch Mountains Wildland is located within the Birch Mountains in Alberta. It contains one of Canada's only free-roaming wood bison herds outside of Wood Buffalo National Park.
The area has a very diverse ecosystem that supports Lake Trout, Lake Whitefish, Cisco, Arctic Grayling, Walleye & Yellow Perch; Osprey & Bald Eagles and many more. The rare, spore-bearing plant quillwort was discovered in the area in 2004 [1] [2].
The Wildland contains 357,066.96 Acres [3]. It is accessible only by fly-in during the summer, and by snowmobile during the winter [4]. There are no developed camping facilities in the park, except for two commercial backcountry lodges: Namur Lake Lodge and Island Lake Lodge [5]. Hiking, fishing, camping, hunting, ice fishing, and on-site OHV riding are welcome [6].
