Queen is a Bollywood film by Viacom18 Motion Pictures & Phantom Films. Directed by Vikas Bahl, the film stars Kangana Ranaut, Lisa Haydon and Rajkummar Rao in lead roles.[1] The film’s story is about a small-town Indian girl, who decides to go on her honeymoon alone. Amit Trivedi has scored the film’s music for the lyrics by Anvita Dutt. The film premiered at Busan Film Festival in October 2013, and released worldwide on March 7, 2014 to immense critical appreciation.

Plot

Rani (Kangana Ranaut) is a 24 year old Punjabi girl staying in Delhi. She is from a very conservative family; her brother escorts her everywhere for her safety. It’s when her wedding gets called off because her fiancé rejects her (Rajkummar Rao), that Rani gets the biggest shock of her life and is totally confused. But instead of crying or lamenting over her current situation, she decides to move on. She goes on her honeymoon alone to Paris and Amsterdam. The film focuses on Rani growing up as an individual, and her journey of rediscovering her own identity while on her honeymoon alone.

Cast

Development

Vikas Bahl wrote the script of the movie keeping in mind Kangana Ranaut, however it was Anurag Basu who connected him with Kangana and helped cast her in the film.[2] The film has been shot in Delhi, Paris, and Amsterdam. Despite shooting abroad, Vikas Bahl did not have a huge budget to spend on the film.[3]

Marketing

The trailer of the film released on 20 December 2013 and was well received by critics. [4]

Soundtrack

The film's soundtrack is composed by Amit Trivedi while lyrics are by Anvita Dutt.[5] The Music of Queen was launched at Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, Mumbai on February 2, 2014.[6]

Reception

Critical Reception

Queen met with critical acclaim. Kangana Ranaut's performance was especially praised by critics.[7]

Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV gave the film 4/5 stars and called the film "spicy, balmy and uplifting" and added, "Kangana’s is the heart and soul of Queen and she does not strike a single false note".[8]Raja Sen from Rediff also awarded the film 4/5 stars and called Kangana 'gobstoppingly spectacular' and said the film is 'a showcase for an actress poised to reign'. [9] Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN gave the film 4/5 stars calling the film "rare and disarming" and described Kangana's performance as " a raw, nuanced, delicately comical"[10] Anupama Chopra praised Kangana's performance, hailing it as "artfully transparent and heartfelt", but said the film is "meandering and indulgent" at places and gave the film 3.5/5 stars.[11]

Boxoffice

Film released on 800 screens in comparison to 850 for Total Siyapaa and 1,600 screens for Gulaab Gang releasing same date so faced a very strong competition on 7 March 2014,[12][13] Queen debuted with a relatively low collections and generated 1.75-2 crores on the first day[14], but grew on Saturday as it collected 3-3.25 crores[15].
