String Quintet No. 2 (Dvořák)

Antonín Dvořák's String Quintet No. 2 in G major, Opus 77 was originally composed in 1875 and first performed on March 18, 1876. It is scored for two violins, viola, cello, and double bass. First written as Op. 18, it was later slightly revised in 1888. Because it was first written at an earlier date, it lacks some folk elements found in most of Dvořák's later works.

The original work was scored in five movements, but the second movement entitled "Intermezzo" was removed because Dvořák felt that having two slow movements made the work too lengthy. He later reworked and republished this movement as the Nocturne for String Instruments, Op.40. The Intermezzo movement is often restored in modern performances.
