===Etymology===
Originally a general term for newly acquired territories, used since the {{w|Southern Song}} dynasty. In the Qing dynasty, various non-[[Han]]-inhabited territories were referred to as {{l-self|zh|新疆|tr=-}}, including southwestern and western [[Guizhou]], Wumeng ({{zh-l|烏蒙}}, modern-day [[Zhaotong]], [[Yunnan]]), {{w|Jinchuan County|Jinchuan}} ({{zh-l|金川|tr=-}}), and the region now known as [[Xinjiang]]. {{zh-l|疆}} denotes the region was inhabited by non-Han ethnicities.

The first instance of a Qing emperor referring to the region now known as Xinjiang as {{l-self|zh|新疆|tr=-}} is found in the foreword of {{lw|zh|欽定新疆識略}} written by the {{w|Daoguang Emperor}} in 1821. Prior to that, the region was referred to as {{zh-l|西域|lit=Western Regions}}, a term used since the Han dynasty ({{zh-ref|Li, 1981}}). In {{lw|zh|大清一統志}} published during the eras of {{w|Qianlong}} and {{w|Jiaqing}}, the region was referred to as {{zh-l|[[西域]][[新疆]]}}. Furthermore, during the era of Qianlong, northern Xinjiang or [[Dzungaria]] was referred to as {{zh-l|準疆}} and {{zh-l|準部}}, among other names, while southern Xinjiang or [[Altishahr]] was referred to as {{zh-l|回疆}} and {{zh-l|回部}}.
