From Proto-Germanic *þiudiskaz (of or relating to a people), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Germanic *þeudō (people, nation), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *tewtéh₂ (people). Akin to Old High German þiutisc (popular language), diutisk (German deutsch), Old Frisian thiōsk, Old Saxon thiudisk, Dutch Duits, Diets, Old Norse þýzkr, Gothic 𐌸𐌹𐌿𐌳𐌹𐍃𐌺𐍉 (þiudiskō). More at Dutch.
