Old Persian tigra- (attested as ASgf 𐎫𐎡𐎥𐎼𐎠𐎶 (/tigrām/) means "pointed" not "arrow". It must have been reconstructed to explain the etymon of Persian تیر (otherwise etymology seems bonkers). This paper also links Tigran to the Median name for Tigris (supposedly meaning "arrowing"), but doesn't provide an inline reference. The form underlying Iranian tigri- would be PIE *(s)tiglis which has no direct reflexes outside Avestan. Most likely the river name from Elamite caused confusion with the inherited forms of *(s)teyg- "to be pointed/sharp; to sting", which gave rise to folk etymologies with "arrow" sense which was then calqued to Arabic and so on. --Ivan Štambuk (talk) 21:10, 5 September 2018 (UTC)
