Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *weyp- (to shake, tremble, agitate; swing away; turn). Cognate with Old Norse veifa (flag), Old English wifer (missile), Latin vibrō whence English vibrate, veer; English weave (to wander), wave, wipe.
