Etymology

  1. From Proto-Mongolic *seleme, compare Buryat һэлмэ (helme), Kalmyk селм (selm), Daur selmii, East Yugur seleme.
  2. The Mongolic term is probably derived from Proto-Tungusic *sele, compare Evenki сэлэ (sələ, iron) and Manchu ᠰᡝᠯᡝᠮᡝ (seleme, dagger).
