  1. A small, independent, military land unit capable of rapid mobility, often using guerrilla tactics against a larger force.

Usage notes

  • Although there have been several notable historical examples, modern usage usually refers to the mobile bands of IRA rebels during the Irish War of Independence 1919 - 1922, operating against the British military.
