A School Bus Safety Road-e-o was held on Monday morning for bus drivers in Ohio County.

That’s where a course was set up with different challenges in the parking lot at Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack, designed to test and increase their operational and safety skills.

"Today gives us the opportunity and a safe environment to hone our skills and to practice and a little friendly competition," bus driver Dave Palmer said.

All of the district’s bus drivers came out hoping to steer clear of the various cones and barriers set up for the challenge.

"Some of them are really tight, you get to the descending alley, or the off-set alley, and you only have 2 inches on each side of the bus,” said Randy McCardle, shop foreman, Ohio County School Bus Garage.

If performed well, drivers could have the opportunity to compete in the state Road-e-o.

And although harder than real-life situations, these obstacles will prepare the drivers to maneuver the roads safely.

"And that’s the most important thing, without hitting anything or without anyone getting hurt,” Palmer said.

But as much as the drivers need to practice safety, other drivers on the roads need to follow the rules as well.

"If you see one stopped, please check all your surroundings before you start moving," Ohio County Schools Administer of Operations David Crumm said.

So, drivers will be up bright and early Tuesday morning for the first day of school ahead.
