About the Item
Billy Childish (b. 1959, Chatham, Kent, United Kingdom; lives and works in Whitstable, Kent) is known for his introspective, autobiographical, and deeply emotional paintings, writing, photography, and music. After leaving secondary school at age 16, Childish worked at the Naval Dockyard in Chatham as an apprentice stonemason. Initially denied an interview to the local art school, he produced hundreds of drawings that gained him entry to London’s Saint Martin's School of Art. Childish's defiance of authority led to his eventual expulsion from art school in 1981. Since then, Childish has gained something of a cult status worldwide, writing and publishing several novels and more than 40 volumes of confessional poetry, recording more than 150 LPs, and creating several hundred works of painting, drawing, photography, and prints.

Billy Childish
Billy Childish (b. 1959, Chatham, Kent, United Kingdom; lives and works in Whitstable, Kent) is known for his introspective, autobiographical, and deeply emotional paintings, writing, and music. Since then, Childish has gained something of a cult status worldwide, writing and publishing several novels and more than 40 volumes of confessional poetry, recording more than 150 LPs, and painting several hundred works. Through all of these disciplines, Childish addresses social, political, and personal issues such as war, protest, his turbulent childhood, and his struggles with addiction. While his confessional poetry and music explore these issues with startling honesty, Childish’s paintings are more subtle. His subjects are often drawn from his environment or are people he knows or admires: birch forests, self-portraits, a lone figure in a pastoral English landscape, and his wife as a reclining female nude. Childish works quickly and intuitively, making spare marks on raw canvas that leave much of it visible. He identifies with artists who worked outside a group or movement, intrigued by their outsider roles in society, such as Vincent van Gogh, Kurt Schwitters, and Edvard Munch. Labeling himself a “radical traditionalist,” Childish has a reverence for traditional oil painting yet has resolutely resisted any connection with a particular group or artistic movement.

Pa la brarma / Palabrarma
By Cecilia Vicuña
Located in New York, NY
Visual poems, the works in Vicuña’s 'PALABRARmas' series are carefully attuned to the power of language. Many of these works incorporate wordplay, and throughout her practice, Vicuña treats words as embodied entities whose forms can be parsed to reveal subliminal meanings across a variety of languages.
For the series title, Vicuña has invented the word “palabrarmas,” a fusion of “palabra” (Spanish for “word”) and “armas” (“weapon”). At the same time, “palabrarmas” also suggests an even wider range of meanings, bearing similarities, for instance, to a portmanteau of the the verb “apalabrar” (“to agree on”), and the word “más” (more). Just as Vicuña emphasizes the capacity of words to cause violence and destruction, so she also suggests that they can be potent tools of reconciliation and understanding.

Provenance: From the artist's studio.
Sonal is a storyteller. Her primary medium of choice is printmaking, exquisite etchings whose protagonists jump off the page to tell their stories. Like all good narratives that lucidly roll from one tale to the other the artist works in series. Be it her Kissa Goi or her new Vachik stories, each work comprises of many parts, all fitting together as one large work, or, equally as pleasing, as individual works that may or may not speak to each other in any combination of pattern. Sonal lives and works in Lucknow, in India, the City famous for its tradition of Ghazal poetry. In past times the poems were displayed in Diwan's (illustrated books) a calligrapher and artist would be commissioned to illustrate the poems. Sonal references these traditions and we can see traces of this in her contemporary images. Ghazal's delight and employ elements of playfulness, anecdote and surprise. They take their audience on a bitter-sweet journey and Sonal invites us to do the same.
The artist explains that in the evenings the women gather on the roof terraces of her town to tell the tales that are passed down. These are stories that primarily revolve around the woman and their everyday role in a patriarchal society. These tales become mixed with the contemporary, both local and global events that effect the lives of the women. At first glance there is an anecdotal quality to the visual narratives but look a little longer and you will be rewarded by layer upon layer of meaning. Through the clever use of text and images of objects which may at first appear to be dislocated, each part of the image pulls together the narrative, expanding it into many different levels.
In Sonal's own words,
This work is very close to my heart, a lot of emotions are attached to this work. Some such
feelings that awakened for the first time and they were priceless. I have lived that time, felt
it very closely, whatever happened to me at that time, I have tried my best to make it work.
Kajal has a very important role, when there are children and grandmothers complete it, it is
said that by applying Kajal in the eyes of the children, the eyes become bigger. Which we
call Nazarota which is a small iron vessel.
