Georgia State Patrol wants to remind drivers to buckle up over the Memorial Day weekend

PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) would like to remind motorists in the state to buckle up this Memorial Day weekend, or pay a fine.

The Click It or Ticket initiative launched on May 23rd, and will last through Monday. Law enforcement agencies ranging from state, county, to city police are partnering up to enforce seat belt laws through regular traffic stops and checkpoints.

The Memorial Day holiday is one of the busiest travel holidays of the year, and State Trooper First Class Jonathan Edwards says it’s important to keep you and your family restrained.

“As soon as you get in the vehicle, as soon as you reach up and put your vehicle in drive, or reverse, put your seat belt on,” said Tfc. Edwards.  “It saves lives.”

According to numbers from the GSP, between 2007 and 2013, there were an average of 466 unrestrained occupant deaths in Georgia. In 2015 nationwide, almost half of all fatalities in vehicle crashes involved someone not being restrained properly.

The fine for being caught without a seat bet is $15 for adults over the age of 16. For children not being restrained correctly, it’s a $50 fine for the first offense.

The GSP also wants to remind drivers that any child under the age of 8 must be in a child seat.
