Hope High School opens new library and media center
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Hope High School on Monday opened its newly refurbished library and media center.
A COVID-safe ribbon cutting event marked the opening of the new library to students and faculty. The project is over a year in the making, backed by $150,000 from Brown University’s Fund for the Education for the Children of Providence.
The old space was described as having “stained ceilings” and “chipped, brown painted wood floors.” Now, the space features movable whiteboards, a conference room, and one on one tutoring spaces.
“It is so important that Hope High’s students now have something brand new to call their own,” said Principal Matthew Buchanan. “When students have visual proof that we are invested in them, they want to invest in themselves. Everyone at Hope is so excited to utilize this space for learning, networking and finding resources that will help them achieve great things.”
Brown University also donated a large projector screen.
“I’m also excited to use the projector,” student Kevin DeCena said to Hope High School staff. “My public speaking class is talking about meeting in this room for our next presentation — it will be so nice to use our computers to help us present!”
With a separate $40,000 grant from the Fund, Hope High School is also working on establishing an International Baccalaureate program. Books on that reading list have been added to the revitalized library.
