Very good minus with endpapers and covers stained by ghost tape marks in clean, very good dust jacket with no nicks, chips or tears.

Good in the publishers library hardcover binding with pictorial boards (all four corners are bumped, page 146 has a horizontal closed tear across the bottom of the page with no loss) in a Very Good DJ with the original price on the lower right corner of the front flap of $3.59 net. This copy was a school library book with some of the associated library markings but no stamps on the page block edges, nothing on the jacket except for the publishers library edition sticker. Overall the book still presents well. The second book of the Prydain Chronicles. Scarce.

First editions, all first printings except for a second printing of Black Cauldron, each volume inscribed on the first blanks or half-titles, "Best wishes from Lloyd Alexander". This fantastical children's pentalogy is inspired by Welsh mythology and is set in the fictional country of Prydain, named after the medieval Welsh word for Britain. Black Cauldron received the 1966 Newbery Honor, and High King won the 1969 Newbery Medal. "The core of Alexander's writing lies in his three substantial series. The first and most influential, especially on the works of contemporary fantasy writers, many of whom. cite him as a major inspiration, was Chronicles of Prydain. It begins with The Book of Three, which follows the literary patterns of legends such as the Mabinogion, but develops into a modern fantasy centering on 20th-century issues. Fast-moving and accessible, it has heroic characters, led by Taran, the assistant pig keeper who ends up as ruler of a new kingdom.
