Writing is one of every vital macro skill in English. It has been a part of the assessment tool utilized by the teachers in assessing the performance of the learners. However, students encountered problems in expressing their thoughts in writing, others don't have unity or coherence of their ideas, as well as the grammars and writing system even they are given enough time to answer. This study identified the level of performance in writing an essay among secondyear Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English students in terms of knowledge of conventions, clarity and coherence, and rhetorical choices. It described the profile of the students in terms of age, sex, and writing experience. A descriptive design with Four-Point Likert Scale, Scoring Guideline/Rubric, Frequency, Percentages, Mean, and ANOVA were utilized. The findings revealed that the respondents' age is 19-20 years old, the majority is female, and onehalf of them have no writing experience. The extent of the performance in writing an essay among them was "competent." There is no significant difference in the level of performance in writing an essay of the respondents when grouped according to their profile. Moreover, the study's findings suggest that the importance of going back to the basics is necessary emphasized. The basics or the foundational lesson in writing will be considered from the Parts of Speech to the making of sentences and paragraphs. Hence, it is suggested that students will practice writing and reading as often to widen their perceptions, knowledge and to improve their grammar, technicalities, and content organization. Also, teachers are encouraged to incorporate basic skills in writing an essay in the different courses and may utilize various approaches and strategies suitable to the needs of the learners. Furthermore, the administrators may provide projects and programs that could cater to students' performance in writing like conducting seminar workshops and training in writing for students.

Writing as one of the four skills in English has an important role for undergraduate students. This is because writing is productive skill which can build and rebuild the student’s motivation in mastering language. Writing is a basic skill for students, because it can improve students’ abilities in mastering language. In the process, writing skills has so many problems and solutions to enrich student’s capabilities. According to Harmer (2007), “writing is used as practice tool to help students practice and work with language they have been studying”. For example, ask a class to write five sentences using a given structure, or using five of the new words or phrases they have been learning. Writing activities like this are designed to give reinforcement to students. Thi s handbook is meant for assisting semester 1 students of the English Education Study Program of Sanata Dharma University. The general objective of the materials in this handbook is to facilitate students so that they are able to write good English sentences and write good short paragraphs. In order to achieve the objective, students are given opportunities to practice analyzing sentences or constructing sentences. Therefore, the materials deal with practicing the minimum requirements in writing English sentences, constructing grammatical and meaningful sentences, in order to compose simple but correct paragraphs in a logical way that those sentences are contextually appropriate and structurally sound. This set of materials highlights the Ignatian Pedagogy Paradigm in which the focus of the learning is set to achieve competence, conscience and compassion areas. The steps cover context in Get Inspired, experience in Get Focused and the beginning of Get Practiced, reflection and action in Get Practiced. The evaluation stage is done by the facilitator. Writing is the most important genre of all four modules of language. This booklet is in four sections. In the first, we give you lots of advice about researching, structuring, and writing essays. In section 2, you can find information about the important technical side of essay writing, and about the criteria we use in marking them. Section 3 is devoted to concrete examples of essays that vary in quality. One is commented on; the others we leave you to assess and talk about in the relevant Study Skills seminar. We do this because we believe that, only by seeing what a good bad or indifferent essay looks like can one improve one's skills and avoid the pitfalls of bad technique. So please read this third section carefully, and do what is asked. Section 4 gives you information about plagiarism and the procedure for appeals against essay marks.
