sarcor ribbon cutting
Sarcor's founder and CEO cuts the ribbon for her new headquarters along with her husband, nephews, and Mayor William Bell on Friday, Dec. 2, 2016.
Selena Rodgers Dickerson opened her first checking account at the former Jefferson County Employee's Credit Union. Years later, she was turned down for her first loan there.
Friday, she cut the ribbon of the building as her own company's headquarters at the Installation at Uptown at 2112 12th Ave. N., the former Jefferson County Employee's Credit Union.
Dickerson started Sarcor, a civil engineering firm, in 2008 after she was laid off. Today, it has 10 employees and will occupy the second floor of the building, while the first floor will have an internet coffee bar while the vault will be a conference room.
"I was raised here, I'm a product of Birmingham City Schools sytstem, and I wanted to give back," Dickerson said.
Dickerson owns the 16,743-square-foot building and the two acres of land it sits on. Corporate Realty is managing the leasing for office space at the Installation at Uptown and hopes to attract creative entrepreneur tenants.
The entrance to the building features a massive mural by Lawson College art instructor Stephen Walker of iconic Birmingham images like Vulcan and the "Welcome to the Magic City" sign.
"This is a great day for the city of Birmingham, for women and minority-owned businesses, but especially for this area," Birmingham Director of Economic Development Lisa Cooper said.
