Trenton Presbyterian Church in Paint Rock Valley, Ala., will be the site of a meeting of a group working to preserve the oral histories of the Appalachian valley east of Huntsville, Ala., on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013. (The Huntsville Times file)
The afternoon gathering Saturday, Nov. 2, from 1 to 2:30 p.m., will honor the stories that have kept the past of the Southern Appalachian valley alive, even as it encourages the creation of new stories. The gathering will include music and refreshments. The meeting will be held in the historic Trenton Presbyterian Church, which is on Alabama 65, about seven miles north of U.S. 72 a bit east of Gurley, Ala.
The event planned by Paint Rock Valley's history project will include optional 20-minute tours afterwards of the proposed working historical farm.
The event is free, with donations welcome to support the grassroots attempt to preserve the history and culture of the mountain valley in which Native Americans used to live. The overall goal of the project is to celebrate a connection between modern Americans and a lifestyle tied to the natural rhythms of the land and ways to preserve natural and human history for healthy communities.
