Athens City Schools officials say the new Athens High School building will not be open until November, AL.com news partner WHNT News 19 reported.
Students will have classes in the former Athens Middle School building on Clinton Street until the new high school is open, officials said. School officials said changes were made to the building to create adequate classroom space, allowing the school to run a full schedule.
"Put in walls, made sure that we had electrical outlets wiring that's in there, some type of projector, drops for computers and technology, and so we turned nontraditional instructional spaces into instructional spaces," said Principal Travis Schrimscher.
Athens City Schools Superintendent Trey Holladay said the unusually wet summer kept workers from completing the courtyard area.
"The goal was to complete the classroom areas of the building by the end of August so that students could begin the year in the new school. However, all the pieces just did not come together as hoped," Holladay said.
He said 90 percent of classrooms are finished. The auditorium, media center and interior courtyard are also incomplete.
Parking may be complicated at the former Athens Middle School on Clinton Street. Holladay said students will be able to park at the Clinton Street location and the new middle school location, which is the old high school. Students who park at the current middle school will be shuttled to class.
