Woman charged in 2021 domestic killing of 20-year-old Birmingham man

A woman has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a 20-year-old Birmingham in 2021.

Mercedes Jernae Bryant, 22, is charged with murder in the killing of 20-year-old Donnie Edward Harris, according to court records made public Wednesday.

Harris was shot to death Nov. 24, 2021, in the Collegeville area.

South Precinct officers responded just before 8 p.m. that Wednesday to UAB Hospital on a report of a person shot. Investigators learned Harris had been brought to hospital by a female.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital at 9:20 p.m.

Police at the time said Harris and a woman were involved in a domestic argument while the two were in the 3000 block of 30th Avenue North.

Birmingham police signed the warrant against Bryant on March 1. She turned herself in at the Jefferson County Jail on Monday and remains held on $500,000 bond.
