Birmingham Botanical Gardens wrap up 50th year with variety of December events

Birmingham Botanical Gardens held its annual Fall Plant Sale on Blount Plaza at the Gardens earlier this year (Joe Songer/[email protected]).

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- The

will close out its 50th year by offering a variety of activities for all ages and areas of interest. Right up until the holidays, the Gardens will host photography classes, volunteer opportunities and several different classes.

Events

Annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon

- Each year, Birmingham Botanical Gardens honors its volunteers with the Annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. This year's event closes a yearlong celebration of The Gardens' 50th anniversary. Awards will be presented, and a potluck luncheon will be served to invited guests.

Memorable Images (Photography Class)

- This class is designed to introduce the student to basic concepts in photography and digital camera operations including: image capture, image sharing, image processing and image sharing.

American Girl: Girls Just Like Me - Festival of Trees

- Celebrate the beauty of the season in The Gardens with American Girl fun. Participants will craft with fragrant plant material such as evergreen and cinnamon, a short hike, holiday story and delicious treats while learning how their favorite American Girl characters celebrate the holidays.

Understanding Botanical Names (elective)

- Learn how much you can discern about a plant based solely on its botanical name. Botanical nomenclature topics to be discussed will be their history, formatting, pronunciation, common prefixes and suffixes, recommended references and much more.

Introduction to Botany (core)

- This class will introduce students to the fundamental concepts of botany, including plant tissues, anatomy of the major vegetative and reproductive structures of the plant body, global plant habitats and basic botanical terminology through the use of a key and a discussion of Alabama plant diversity.
