This collodion photograph was taken by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898), better known as Lewis Carroll, and would have required over 40 seconds of exposure. 'The Beggar Maid' was a popular poem by Lord Alfred Tennyson (1809-1892) published in 1842, Tennyson thought the portrait one of the most beautiful photographs he had ever seen.
