Here's the thing about mermaid hair: It requires a light base or a willingness to spend a lot of quality time with bleach. Fortunately, a cohort of dark-haired color enthusiasts decided to create their own version of the trend, and oil-slick hair was born. Turns out bright purple, blue, and green highlights look amazing on dark hair.

And if you want to try the oil slick trend but want it to be really subtle? Take a cue from Tumblr user jesrever. She got some oil-slick highlights, but you wouldn't be able to tell by just looking at her. Nope, she has to run her fingers through her hair to show them off.

In a Tumblr post she explained how she pulled it off. Though she lives in Singapore, she took her inspiration from a familiar talent, Sally Hershberger colorist Aura Friedman. She told her local colorist to mimic the technique of coloring a section of the hair that's under your top layer. "If your hair is layered and you want it subtle, make sure the layer is slightly longer than the top layers and it'll show through!," she writes. It's like having two hairstyles at once.
