AT&T 60-Minute Digital Answering System with Time/Day Stamp
This 1740BK stand-alone answering system records outgoing announcements and incoming messages on flash memory, so there are no tricky tapes or moving parts to manage. Digital operation ensures reliable performance, instant access to messages, and the ability to selectively save and delete on command.
Stay organized with the time/day stamp, which announces the time and day each message was recorded before playback. With remote access, it's possible to listen to mail or even change your outgoing greeting by calling in from any touchtone phone.
Message Guard Memory
Message Guard memory ensures your inbox is available even in the event of a power failure, and 60 minutes of digital recording time allow you to save or receive messages without worry they'll be cut off. - Reviewed in Canada on November 20, 2024Verified PurchaseMy old answering machine died after nearly 27 years of use, so I bought this one to replace it. I have a landline phone, so I need a stand-alone answering machine for it. This is an amazing little device. It's half the size of my old one, and was super easy to set up. The slanted base means I don't have to walk right up to it to see if there are any messages. I also love that it beeps to tell me there's a new message. I greatly appreciate the technology behind this, including the internal memory so it won't lose messages in a blackout and the fact that it doesn't need a battery for that purpose. Overall, it's a great little device and I'm very happy with it.
- Reviewed in Canada on January 18, 2024Verified PurchaseThis machine is near perfect. If it weren't for power outages and having to set up the machine anytime it happens it would be perfect. I spent some time looking for a low cost answering machine for my landline phone as the free one my phone company offered never worked. I came across this one and decided to give it a try. To be honest, I was absolutely pleased with the quality and easy to use interface. I had it set up within 5 minutes and never missed another phone call again.
We recently got rid of our landline as we are now using our cell phones solely and if we ever go back I would most likely buy this machine again and use it over any phone company provided service because I trust it more.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 9, 2022Verified PurchaseIt does what I want an answering machine to do.
For those who have run into a machine freezing / getting stuck problem like I did, it seems like it might be because of a saved message that's corrupted or somehow saved wrong. For me, it was a temporary problem that I did two things to try to clear and one or both fixed the problem.
1) I had originally set a few options that require Caller ID... but I don't have Caller ID, so I corrected them. These are set to yes or no in the machine using the settings button. This is explained in the instructions that come with the machine, and which you can also download from AT&T's website.
2) It's best just to quote the solution I found at fixya-dot-com: "AT&T 1740 answering machine
Q: I have an AT&T answering machine that seems to have a corrupted message that freezes the machine. Unplugging/plugging in temporarily allows the machine to work until I try to play the message. Is there a way to do a reset to clear all the messages and bring the system back to factory defaults?
A: Same thing happened to my parents' AT&T 1740 answering machine. I called and recorded another message to their machine, then when I played back the messages I was able to skip past the corrupted message to the new one. At the end of reviewing the messages, it gives you the option to erase all messages. This cleared the bad one and the machine works fine now."

- Reviewed in Canada on December 23, 2024Verified PurchaseBought this as a temporary item. Used it for about a year. Works great.
- Reviewed in Canada on December 9, 2024Verified PurchaseI printed a 16x11 inch picture of the product and I added button descriptions. It hangs on the wall above the product so I do not need to go to manual to use it. I put the product in a Ziploc bag and I hanged it on a cork board so it does not take precious desk space. Just remember to make the air holes in the Ziploc bag for cooling air flow reasons. All my previous machines were BLINKING when there was a message waiting. This DOES NOT BLINK. Just shows the number of new messages waiting. If you need to put the machine where you don't look at it often and receiving messages quickly every time is important buy an answering machine that blinks when there is a message waiting. This product may be great for the bedroom if you want to have the option of sleeping without listening to the messages first.
